THE STORY
Darksiders spins an entertaining yarn about War, the horseman, who ends up on Earth after being tricked about the Seventh Seal being broken. The apocalypse is happening and there's nothing he can do about it as The Council have stripped him of his immense powers. So, you set off on a quest to regain said powers and find out just what the hell's been going on. And do you know what, it's pretty damn entertaining.
Bayonetta, on the other hand, basically makes no sense whatsoever, seems wilfully aware of this, and doesn't appear to care. Bayonetta herself is an Umbra Witch, an oddly attractive lunatic who wears her own hair as her clothes and has guns on her feet. It's gleefully Japanese, filled with game references and is relentlessly amusing, but completely and utterly incomprehensible.
WINNER: DARKSIDERS
THE VISUALS
The engine Vigil Games has used for Darksiders really isn't up to scratch. Textures are bland, the lighting engine is woeful and the Xbox version is plighted with frame rate and screen tearing issues. While the character design is generally excellent, Darksiders could never be called a good looking game
Platinum games has used the full power of the 360 to create a vibrant, glistening world rich with personality and character. The PS3 version, though, is not up to the same standard, which has serious frame rate issues. Still, Bayonetta is a very good looking game.
WINNER: BAYONETTA
THE COMBAT
Some have commpared Darksiders to God Of War, which on the surface it is, but in truth it doesn't manage to mimic the fluidity and brutality of Kratos' chain-weilding fury. In truth, it's fairly simple hack and slash, with a lashing of depth revealing itself when you purchase a few upgrades as you progress.
Bayonetta is basically a series of fights tied together with a bunch of nonsense, and it doesn't matter a jot. These fights are the best you'll find anywhere. The intricacy of the combat, the technicality of the dodge mechanics and the Witch Time slow-mo, the sheer number of attacks you have access to - it's just mind blowing. The finest example of 3rd person fighting ever made.
WINNER: BAYONETTA
THE PUZZLING
Darksiders' clear influence is Zelda, and it's not shy about showing it. There's bombplants, things to set alight to open doors, items to find in huge dungeons and bosses to kill with said items. Unfortunately it lacks the raw invention of Shigeru Miyamoto's finest, but it's a brave facsimile.
There aren't really many puzzles in Bayonetta. Occasionally you'll find a giant key next to a giant door with a giant keyhole in it, but that just feels more like a reference to Kingdom Hearts than anything else.
WINNER: DARKSIDERS
THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE
Darksiders is a much more well-rounded videogame, but by jacking all trades and mastering none, it falls behind the sheer brilliance of Bayonetta's single mindedness. We're lucky to get anything close to the quality of either of these games so early in the year, but ultimately, Sega and Platinum Games have created a monster. A beautiful, all singing, all dancing slice of immaculately designed madness.
OVERALL WINNER OF THE DAY...
BAYONETTA!
