Sony ships 30 million PlayStation 2 units
The company releases its global sales numbers.
SCEI has announced today that it's shipped a cumulative total of 30 million PlayStation 2 units throughout all three major territories: North America, Asia, and Europe. According to the figures released by the company today, the North American territory is in the lead for total penetration, with 11.3 million shipped units, followed by Asia with 9.9 million, and Europe with 8.8 million.
"Even after a pivotal year for the gaming industry in 2001, we remain confident about our opportunities for continued growth. As an illustration of the demand for PlayStation 2, we announced in February 2002 that the company had shipped 26 million units worldwide. Now, as of May 5, 2002, just three months later, we have shipped 30 million units worldwide," commented Kaz Hirai, president and COO of Sony Computer Entertainment America.
Sony is expected to make announcements pertaining to new developments in PlayStation hardware, software, and broadband connectivity at E3 later this month. Stay with GameSpot for continuous coverage of the event as these topics surface.
