Tilt Sensitive Accessory Coming to XBox 360
4/6/2007, 1:13pm Eastern Time
What started as a homebrew project to bring tilt sensitivity to Microsoft's Xbox 360 will now be produced commercially, according to an Engadget report.
Purdue University student Adam Thole reached an agreement with specialty accessory maker Talismoon to commercially produce his tiltBoard module for Microsoft's console. When attached to an Xbox 360 controller, Thole's tiltBoard allows gamers to replicate controls normally relegated to the controller's left analog stick by reproducing the stick's "max/min values for the Y-axis when it is tilted 45 degrees or more up/down and "the max/min values for the X-axis when it is tilted 60 degrees or more left/right."
tiltBoard does not appear to have depth-registering capabilities, a feature Nintendo's Wii Remote incorporates. A video of tiltBoard in action is available for viewing on Engadget's news site.
Thole has previously sold the product on his website, and in his last update on its sales on February 25 was sold out of tiltBoards. At this point, not much else is known regarding the commercial distribution or release date of the product other than Talismoon's involvement in producing the accessory. Thole's website encourages potential buyers that tiltBoard will be "worth the wait," and to check back over the coming weeks.
It does not appear at this time that Microsoft has any involvement with tiltBoard.
