""Back in 1998 we all became fully-fledged photographers thanks to Nintendo’s revolutionary Game Boy Camera. Once equipped with the accompanying Game Boy Printer, any snap could be turned into a stamp-sized print to keep. In today’s digital era though, getting these photographs off the accessory is tricky feat - or at least it used to be before the newly announced BitBoy.

Up until now these black and white captures had to be extracted out of the Game Boy Camera’s SRAM (save file) using fan-made software. Before that though, you’d of course need some form of reading save files off physical cartridges, or specially designed cables. While the Joey-Squinson USB adapter and Mad-Catz Camera Cable could do the job just fine, the whole process is rather long winded.

Alexander Bahr who runs GameBoyPhoto.com is often taking photographs of events and daily life using the lo-fi technology. With the frustrations mentioned above, Bahr decided it was about time that a more streamlined alternative was available to extracting images from the Game Boy Camera. Out of his research the BitBoy was born, an alternative to the Game Boy Printer which writes photographs directly onto an attached SD Card.

The BitBoy is set to cost $65 from Bahr’s BigCartel store upon release in the near future. As not all of us are photographers in need of this SD Card solution, the BitBoy also offers one more handy feature for the gamers amongst us. As the device is fully capable of mimicking the Game Boy Printer, any game which has print functionality - such as Pokemon Yellow and Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening - will be able to save to SD Card the various images that were intended for printing all those years ago.
