Capcom Asks What PSP Fans Want
December 13, 2004 - With current trends in sales figures and market demographics meaning little to how Sony's PlayStation Portable will make a name for itself in the game market, Capcom is going to the fans to see what they think of the PSP and what they'd like to see next out of the venerable publisher. The company this week launched a PSP poll for new owners of the system to see how interested they are in playing Capcom games on PSP. Of course, this poll may not necessarily point to where the company goes with its PSP projects (we all know what titles we'd go for out of the Capcom library, but the company will hopefully try other things as well so that gamers get what they never knew they wanted.) The feedback form does show, however, some things that the company may be thinking about
The biggest thing Capcom seems interested in asking gamers is how important WiFi features are to them. When asking what kind of genres gamers are interested in playing in a handheld format, there's an entire separate column for Wireless LAN communication. The feedback form ask asks gamers what their most interested about with PSP (reasons to choose including WiFi play, up-to-date game hardware, multimedia functions, screen size and quality, and Sony brand), whether they bought it yet or not or are still considering, and age and gender.
As far as the games, Capcom has two fields of interest for asking gamers what they want. One is genres (mostly with standard genres, although wacky Japanese-specific genres like breeding sims, romance play novels and music are included, as is a very specific breakdown of RPGs into regular RPG, Action RPG, and Sim RPG.) The other is franchises, which features a write-in field as well as several well-known Capcom series: Resident Evil, Gyakuten Saiban, Street Fighter, Mega Man, Breath of Fire , Capcom's VS. fighting series and Onimusha are all there to choose from the list. More curious entries on the form include the new PS2 Monster Hunter franchise and Capcom's dormant Rival Schools -- after its unexpected revival of Darkstalkers on PSP, we wouldn't be surprised to see Capcom make some more surprises happen with the handheld.
Capcom has so far announced three PSP projects Darkstalkers Chronicle and a version of Viewtiful Joe and Devil May Cry. You can read the Capcom PSP poll (if you can read Japanese, that is) on the Capcom official website.
