In the newest issue of PSM, Capcom has unveiled the first images and details from Capcom’s sequel to the widely acclaimed Devil May Cry. While Gaming Age is currently unable to provide a look at the game’s screen shots, you aren’t missing much; many of the screen shots are blown up, resulting in an extensive pixelated look. Capcom should be releasing official images as we near Devil May Cry 2’s public unveiling at E3.
Currently 30% completed, the team behind DMC2 surprisingly had no involvement with the original. DMC’s team is working on an original project but is frequently exchanging conversations with the DMC2’s team to point them in the right direction. Right now Capcom is keeping a lid on DMC2’s story line, but we do know it takes place in a sprawling European town full of evil. Dante’s mission will be to take down the ruler of the city, but beyond that, we have no idea what draws Dante to the city. “This character is aiming to revive the demons once again,” stated producer Tsuyoshi Tanaka in the feature.
In addition to taking control of Dante, who’s sporting a new look that slightly exposes his rippling chest, Capcom is implementing a second playable character into DMC2. The other character is in fact a she, but it isn’t whom you think. Trisha from the original seems to have been ditched for unknown reasons in favor of a brand-new heroine. Expect Dante and the new character to have separate but similar storylines ala Claire and Leon of Resident Evil 2. Non-playable characters will play more of a factor in DMC2, but they will not fight alongside the player.
Gameplay wise Capcom does not plan to change DMC’s basic setup – only tweak and enhance it. Apparently we can expect new moves that will wow us just as much as watching Dante juggle evil wooden puppets in the air with his bullets. “You will see a renewed Dante who is full of bad-ass attitude,” said Tanaka to PSM. “We expect gamers all over the world to challenge this cool new game with their even cooler techniques controlling this new Dante character.” Additionally, Tanaka mentioned that Dante’s demon form will be even more spectacular than before and that the “game system will be modified around it.”
There are plenty of its and buts for the sequel. The team has yet to decide if it will follow the orb system used to open doors and purchase items that the original followed. Considering how early DMC2 is, the team still has plenty of time to nail down ideas before the game ships out the door. Speaking of, Capcom expects DMC2 to see a Japanese release before the end of the year, but is unsure if it will make it to the US before 2003.
