With Dead or Alive fans abuzz with theories regarding the exact nature of Team Ninja's (Tecmo's notorious development team) next project, Dead or Alive: Code Chronos, I thought I'd go straight to the source and ask Tomonobu Itagaki (Tecmo's notorious leader) to clarify things.
Over the course of a 6-hour conversation that involved an in-depth look at Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, followed by loads of Korean bar-b-que and Asahii beer I coerced some nifty details out of the man with the shades.
I mentioned to him that the kids on Tecmo's own message boards, among others, have been shooting off their theories as to what kind of game, exactly, Code Chronos would be. " exactly is Code Chronos?" I asked him. With a whiskey in one hand and a cigarette in another, Itagaki-san met the question head on: "I often go to Tecmo's message board and I see the same things you're talking about. People will talk about Chronos, but the fact of the matter is that they have no idea." "Explain" I suggested. "As you know, many people bought an Xbox because of Dead or Alive 3. Code Chronos is a game that will fill every Dead or Alive fan's dream. It's my way of saying `thanks for the support' and I want to reward the Xbox owners's loyalty to the system. I could develop for other platforms, but I don't want to, because they're not as good as the Xbox. I want to make the best game possible and for that I need the Xbox hardware." Itagaki said. "Dead or Alive: Code Chronos is my way of giving back to the DOA fan, but it is a multi-part process. The first step in this effort is Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, the next step is Chronos. Regarding Chronos, I can't reveal any specific details, but what I can say is that no one has any idea what it really is except Team Ninja. It will defy your expectations."
So there you have it. Conservative estimates might suggest that DOA" Code Chronos will feature every costume, boss character, environment, and even the return of the Danger Zones. When I asked Itagaki-san about the Danger Zones having gone missing since the first DOA, he said "No one ever said they were gone forever" and smiled. However, our guess regarding Chronos is just that. For all we know it could be an RPG or a first-person shooter. Itagaki told us that he'll let us in on his little secret before the year is up. So hold on to your hats. We'll let you know when we do.
