I have nothing to do with the Viper-GC stuff (heck, i didn't even knew until today that such a thing exists).
My IPL replacement will have the following features:
- Boot from network (BBA) in seconds
- Boot from original DVD disc (regionfree, but of course a NTSC cube still can't properly display PAL and vice versa)
- Boot from SD card
- Boot from Memory card
- Boot to original IPL (trivial, really)
- (simple) Serial debug interface! (what i always missed)
It will have 4MB Flash, so you can flash multiple loaders if you like and switch between them.
It can be reflashed either using a parallel adapter or a serial cable (i haven't decided yet, currently both works but serial is slow, but a standard interface), AND it can be flashed directly from the cube! (the other option is simply a recovery mode, which you won't need unless you really mess around).
And it will have some special features which i don't want to announce now. They will be a special surprise
Ok, this all wouldn't be worth a message as it might sound fucking commercial, BUT the best thing comes last:
it's completely FREE! All software will be open sourced, all schematics will be available, all VHDL sources too, and the tools to compile/synthesize will be availabe as well (at least in an evaluation version)!
I hope to get the material costs to about $10, depending on how much i have to pay for the PCBs and CPLDs.
The two prototypes i built were at about $20, but prototype PCBs are always expensive and i bought the CPLDs at reichelt, which are very expensive as well.
I want this project to become a community project, where everybody might help.
I want to help anybody who isn't able to produce the PCBs (or solder them) by himself by producing some board or even pre-mod some GCs, without taking (much) money for this.
We might establish something like they did on the xbox: volunteers mod your gamecubes without taking (much) money.
In this context I want to announce that i'll be holding a lecture at the 21c3 in berlin, germany at the end of this year. I will talk about "hacking the gamecube" in general, and another well known person will talk about gc-linux. If you have time and/or money, please come and laugh about my english pronounciation.
Honestly: I'm not really the guy of big announcements, as i don't like to announce something before it's really working and final, but hey, it's about to be final.
Oh, and i hereby claim to have had the "first modchip for the gamecube" (uh no, that's not true. another guy i know of has made such a thing before, yes before i even started to look at the gamecube. however, i'm pretty sure he didn't has anything todo with the viper stuff, but he was first), however i would never dare to call my work a "modchip", as a modchip is there to play pirated games.
So this isn't a modchip, but the viper gc isn't either.
Please do not ask me questions about this before 21c3. Meet me there and ask me there, but please don't email me until.
