"The successor of DVD has been announced: Blu-Ray discs will have a capacity of 27GB on a single layer 12cm disc. The maximum datarate of the discs is 36MBits/s which is 3.6 times higher than the max we have on DVDs today. Discs will use an easy to use cartridge to protect the disc against dust and fingerprints. This discs are called Blu-Ray because blue laser technology is being used. DVD players that can record and play such discs are expected to hit the market between 2003 and 2004. Of course these discs will have some copy protection scheme that is likely to be more stable than what's on DVD video these days which leads to another erosion of fair use rights. Each disc will also have a unique ID stored which enables to track pirate copies."
