One of the biggest subject in the emails we received had to do with the vehicles in Halo 2, particularly the Warthog. Cheyenne Deloach told us that:
The Warthog has a new horn and an e-brake which are used by the L and R buttons.
We hadn't heard about this new feature before, but Frank confirmed it, saying:
[The Warthog] has an e-brake and a horn, on left and right triggers respectively. The e-brake is for fast stops and crazy turns. The horn is funny, but it's also useful for signaling teammates to get in.
Another reader, named Mike Sharkey, asked us about the possibilty of being able to shift gears while driving the Warthog, presumably to attack hills faster or get away from vehicles with heavier weaponry:
I've heard that the Warthog will have multiple gears, each with its own torque. Do you know if it will be manual or automatic?
Well, we're sorry to disappoint you, Mike, but it looks like you're only half right. According to Mr. O'Connor:
It's an Auto. There are gear ratios, but not ones you can manually select!
When it comes to the Warthog, it seems that everyone wants to know if any new models will be debuting in the game. The man known only as "Joe" says:
There will be several type of warthogs. These are the ones I know of. Troop Transport (instead of a gun in the back there will be seating) Snow Level oriented Hog, (White and has treads like the tank instead of wheels) and finally a normal warthog, except that it is camoflauged (colored) to blend in with jungle levels.
It looks like Joe is right, judging by this picture that's been on our site since mid-June. As you can clearly see, there's a 'Hog that looks like it's ready to take on some serious ice, as well as one that would be a perfect fit for the rainforests of Brazil. Since so little is know about the single player game, though, it's impossible to say if these models will actually be in the game. It's nice to think that they will be, but there's a good chance that they're simply prototypes. However, I have to admit that it makes me smile when I imagine hauling ass across the frozen tundra, turning sharply to run down some Covenant Grunts.
We also received a bunch of emails about the weaponry on the Warthogs. In the first feature, I mistakenly said that there was a new gun mounted on the back of the vehicle. In reality, there's actually two. The E3 2004 multiplayer demo was our first glimpse at the rocket launcher, which fired an unlimited supply of rockets, exploding much like the shoulder mounted variety. However, I made the mistake of calling the artillery "rockets" when talking about the E3 2003 single player demo, and it was pointed out to me by Khristofer Morrish, who said:
They weren't rockets because rocket is basically a bomb with a jet pack, but the things coming out were bullets that exploded on impact.
He's right, of course. In the E3 2003 demo, the Warthog is able to destroy covenant tanks and Ghosts using a powerful gun that appears to shoot explosive shells. It's hard to tell how rapidly the gun fires, but it sure packs quite a punch. The only Warthog-mounted weapon we haven't seen in action is the tradition chaingun from the first game. Will it be making an appearance in the sequel?
Life on Live
One of the biggest features of Halo 2 will be the ability to play online using Xbox Live. Many people feel that built-in online multiplayer play was the only thing missing from the original. Nearly everyone's seen the multiplayer demo from E3 2004, but some people still had some questions regarding the new addition of clans. Leon Hodges asks:
I was just wondering if Halo 2 on Xbox Live was going to be only clan based or can anyone who doesn't want to be in a clan play it as well? A few people on Xbox Live have told me that it was clan based only and I haven't been able to find out if it isn't, as most of the websites that I have visited have all spoken about clans.
Personally, I'm psyched about the addition of clan play. It's going to be great to be able to get online, quickly meet up with a group of friends, and take on other groups in games like Capture the Flag. However, for those times when no one else is online (I'm up very, very late on many nights), it'd be nice to just hop on and play. So, what's it going to be, Frankie?
Anyone with an Xbox Live account can go online to play.
Well, that settles that. I wonder, though, about being able to go online with multiple people. I know when playing other online shooters (Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow for example), it would be nice to be able to get on Live with a friend. Apparently, I'm not the only one wondering about it, judging by what John Canavan has to say:
Do you know if you will be able to take multiple players online from one Xbox, like you can with system link?
The folks at Bungie obviously feel the same way, knowing that if your friend doesn't have Xbox Live, you've now got a good reason to invite him over to join your clan. Master O'Connor sez:
You can play two player split-screen multiplayer on Xbox Live with a single guest.
Alright! Everybody over to my house for beer, pretzels, and some shotgun-only multiplayer action! Honestly, though, the addition of online play is just the thing to get everyone and, of course, their mother on Xbox Live, which only makes life better for all of us already playing on the best online console gaming service around.
Well, that's it for our first day of Halo 2 Reader Feedback. Be sure to come back tomorrow for some new info on weapons, dual wielding, and some choice nuggets regarding gameplay. See you tomorrow!
Welcome to part two of our Halo 2 Reader Feedback Follow-Up feature, in which we (with a lot of help from our friends at Bungie) answer some of the emails we received after running our Halo 2 - All We Know feature. For anyone who missed Part One yesterday, we talked a bit about some of the additions to the Warthogs, as well as the play on Xbox Live. Hopefully, you read it and you're excited to see what we have for you today. If you're a gun nut, you might want to stick around.
Guns Don't Kill People, Spartans Kill People
One of the best things about the original Halo was the wide variety of weapons at your disposal. Not only were you able to slay your foes with the game's human weapons, including the versatile pistol and the devastating shotgun, you could also pick up the alien firearms dropped by dead Covenant soldiers. Halo 2 features some old favorites mixed in with new toys, and a lot of people have questions about them.
One gun that people have questions about is the new Battle Rifle that is replacing the Assault Rifle. At E3 2004, we were shown the Battle Rifle's features, including a different firing rate for when you're zoomed in than when you're in the standard view. The gun was able to fire single shots when zoomed, and quick, three shot bursts when unzoomed. It was hard to tell, though, if the firing was all manual. Eyan Stevenson asks:
I was reading some information on what you stated about the battle rifle in the upcoming game Halo 2 for Xbox. I was wondering if you can just hold the trigger (unzoomed) and it will shoot 3 rounds, pause, shoot 3 rounds, pause, shoot 3rounds or do you have to keep tapping the trigger?
When you're aiming through the scope, you can only fire single shots as fast as your finger can move, and it appears to be the same way with the quick bursts. When we asked Frank, he said:
The battle rifle fires in short bursts. It is not a fully automatic weapon, as such, it's very accurate when used correctly.
For many people, the pistol is great for use in both close quarter situations and for taking your foes out from afar. Featuring a 2X zoom mode, a quick shot or two in the head would kill your opponent immediately. We've seen screenshots of Master Chief using the pistol, but it hasn't been seen in any of the gameplay demos. Mathew wonders if it will be making an appearance in the sequel:
Will the pistol still be in Halo 2? If it is, will it be downgraded, like no zoom on it?
Alas, Halo fans, we've got a bit of bad news for you, but I think it might be better to let Frank break the news to you:
[The Pistol] will be back. It has been changed to suit dual-wielding and no longer has a scope.

I gotta admit, this bums me out just a bit. I'm a big fan of the Pistol, and my friends and I frequently play Pistol-only games. It feels like more of a weapon designed for skillful players, since it requires better aim on the player's part. Still, I have to feel like it's for the best, if it's going to benefit the game's new dual-wielding system. The ability to hold two weapons is going to be a great addition, and will (hopefully) add a bit more strategy into the mix. Some people are still a bit confused about how the dual-wielding will affect their game. Andrew seems to think that you'll be able to carry a veritable arsenal on you at all times:
Now dual weapons sounds more fun, to the point where you're able to carry 2 spares of the same gun, besides the ones in your hand, making it 4 guns for 1 weapon choice and another 4 for another choice. Who carries 8 guns? Come on.
Eight guns would be insanely ridiculous and, thankfully, Bungie feels the same way. It sounds like they have a good system in place, and while it might sound a little confusing at first (I got a little turned around the first time I played it), it doesn't take long to master it. According to Frank:
You can hold two, carrying one in reserve. But to switch to the reserve (third) weapon, you have to drop one being dual-wielded. Relax. You'll get used to it in two minutes. It's simpler to play than to describe.
What about when plain old guns just won't cut it? Sometimes you just need to toss a grenade into a group of enemies or take out a Covenant Elite by cracking his skull open with the butt of your Shotgun. We've already seen that Halo 2 will again feature both options, but will it still work when you've got your hands full of firearms? Darren Huff wonders the same thing, asking:
I have a question: can you still perform melee attacks when you're holding two guns, or do you have to put one down? And how do you throw grenades?
I would think that it would be tough to lob a grenade when you're holding two weapons, and it seems like you wouldn't be able to do much damage by hitting your opponent with only one hand. Let's ask Frank, though, since he's the expert here:
[Master Chief] can melee from a dual wielding position, but will drop a gun to do it. The same applies to throwing grenades.
When it comes to weapons, most of the questions were about the new Covenent Sniper Rifle that we've seen glimpses of, also called the Covenant Carbine, according to the info that Craig here picked up:
I just read your lengthly article on "What You Know" about Halo 2, and there was no mention of the Covenant sniper rifle. According to a free mag I picked up from Gamestop, it talks about, and I quote "The Covenant Sniper Rifle takes its cues from the human-created weapon, but adds on a high-powered, lightning-fast energy burst to deal damage from afar,"end quote.
We've got a screenshot of the new weapon, but there hasn't been much info released as to how it will work. It sounds like it will function a lot like the human Sniper Rifle, except for the fact that it fires plasma rounds instead of regular bullets. There's still a lot of questions about it, though, such as how many levels of zoom will be allowed and how often you'll be able to fire. Will it be a single shot weapon (like the Sniper Rifle) or can you fire a few rapid bursts? It's all speculation right now, since the public has not yet seen the weapon in action.
Creature Feature
We've seen some of the Covenant troops in action, including our old friends the Grunts and the Elites, but there are some new kids on the block this time around. Romsin Khoshabian was the first person to point the aliens out, sending us an email that simply read:
I read somewhere it said that the 2 new enemies will be Brutes and Prophets.
Evan Jones offered up a bit more, speculating about the nature of the baddies:
You also included a picture of what I know as a "Brute" (the monkey type thing). There is, in fact, one more new enemy that I know of, it is known as a Prophet. Whether this strange, religious figure is one of a kind, or just a new enemy remains to be seen.
The pictures he's talking about can be found in our screenshot gallery, and if you take a look at the Brute, you'll notice that he's basically a big, hairy ape of an alien, and he definitely doesn't look like someone who should be messed with. Of course, the Master Chief did more than mess with them when he meleed attacked one and jacked a Ghost from another in the E3 2003 demo. In the above picture, he's also carrying a gun, but our readers are divided over what kind it might be. Some say it's a flamethrower, while others suggest that it's a grenade launcher. We haven't seen either of those options in action yet, so it's hard to say if it's one of those or a completely different weapon.
If you take a look at the Prophets on the other hand, you can see that they look very regal in a lot of ways, with a large headdress and ornate robes. Everyone seems to have their opinions on what role the Prophets will play in Halo 2 with some readers, like Mr. Jones, suggesting that they serve as a religious figure. Others feel like the Prophets will be field generals in the Covenant's war against humanity.
Not all of your questions were about weapons or vehicles or gameplay. A few of our international readers wondered when they'd be getting a copy of Halo 2 in their local Boutique Electronica or JeuArret. Rockdrigo wondered:
First of all, thank you very much for giving us so much detail about this game. I'm from Mexico City and the game will be getting here long after Nov 9th but I'm hoping I can get my hands on it as soon as possible. Do you know the timeframes of the release in other countries???
Microsoft has already announced that the game would be released in certain European countries on the 11th, two days after it hits shelves in the U.S. But what about our friends around the world, Frank?
Worldwide release is simultaneous, except some countries in Europe will release on the 11th of November.
Well Rockdrigo, it sounds like your wish might come true, and you'll be playing the game online with the rest of the newbies. They didn't mention how many units would ship to each country, though, so be sure to line up early!
We got a couple, um, "duh" questions, too. My favorite was from one reader (who shall remain nameless) who was a bit worried that his current system wouldn't be able to provide the computing power necessary to make Halo 2 look and play great. I'll let him explain:
You've said that Halo 2 is in more ways then one bigger and of higher quality then Halo. My question is that, will my X-Box be able to handle Halo 2, or do i have to wait and buy the X-box 2? Yes, I know, its kind of a dumb question.
Well, considering Halo 2 will be out in November, while the next Microsoft console won't be available until late 2005 at the earliest, it's an easy one to figure out. Just to be absolutely sure, though, let's doublecheck with Frank:
Halo 2 is only available for Xbox, so you'd better hope the Xbox can handle it...
On that note, we've come to the end of our first Halo 2 Reader Feedback feature. Thanks again to Frank O'Connor and the fine folks at Bungie for spending part of their valuable crunch time answering some of our questions. We'll be bringing you another in a few weeks, so be sure to drop us a line with any new info, rumors, or just good old fashioned compliments!
