Back in April, Platinum Games released their third Bayonetta trailer. About two-thirds of the way through it, in what looks like a cut-scene, Bayonetta slides underneath a truck in the middle of a highway and transforms into a panther. A couple of seconds later, she does the same thing -- minus the truck and the highway -- in what is clearly a gameplay sequence. So during a recent interview with the game's director Hideki Kamiya and producer Yusuke Hashimoto, I figured it was time to find out more about this, and, as it turns out, other transformations.
First, a few specifics on the panther: You don't start the game with that ability; it's something you unlock along the way. But you don't have any limitations on how much you want to use it -- there's no timer or meter, and it seems designed to mix in with Bayonetta's normal moves rather than serve as a separate, invincible mode. You simply trigger it by double-tapping a button, and can then run faster and jump higher than you'd be able to otherwise, which strikes me as something that might be useful or necessary in platforming challenges and finding secret areas in the game.
According to Kamiya, the panther was not inspired by the four-legged creature in his previous game -- the wolf in Okami -- but was included because it seemed like an animal that fits in with Bayonetta as a character. The developers are aiming to make her a sexy witch, and a panther fits in with that approach, he said.
It's also important to note the difference between Bayonetta's transformations and her ability to summon creatures. The latter ability you may have seen quite a few times in the trailers released thus far, or the B-roll footage featured in our video interview posted yesterday. That, technically, is her hair transforming rather than Bayonetta herself, and the main difference being that, at least in the examples Platinum has shown thus far, you don't directly control it. After you trigger one of the "hair" moves, you wiggle the analog stick or jam on buttons to finish an enemy off, without worrying about aiming or movement.
OK, so back to the transformations. While Kamiya and Hashimoto weren't ready to reveal any specific examples of them in our interview besides the panther, they were willing to suggest what we may be able to look forward to.
"I can give you a hint," said Kamiya. "Bayonetta's a type of witch, and witches are generally associated with black cats, so she turns into a black panther. So, if you think about what other types of animals are associated with witches, you might be able to guess what other types of animals she can transform into."
"The kinds of things she can transform into are living creatures," added Hashimoto.
My first thought was a serpent, but then I remembered that Bayonetta's whip was designed to look like a snake, so that one's already accounted for in the game. Perhaps a raven or another animal that can fly?
"It's really cold out here, isn't it," joked Kamiya. "Oh, I'm sorry I wasn't listening, did you ask a question?"
