Rumour: Doom 4 To Be Scored By Trent Reznor?
While we’ve been told to expect no official news on Bethesda and id Software’s upcoming Doom 4 until QuakeCon 2010, which will take place from August 12 to August 15, a reliable source has informed us that id are attempting to sign on Nine Inch Nails’ frontman Trent Reznor as sound engineer for the project.
For those unfamiliar with Reznor, who is largely credited with popularising the industrial rock genre, we’ll attempt to summarise his career as quickly as possible. Best known for Nine Inch Nails, an industrial rock “band” of which he is the only official member, creating music through extensive use of multitracking and synthesisers, he was also responsible for scoring the original Quake in 1996. The NIN logo also makes a cameo appearance in the game on the side of nailgun ammunition.
Reznor, being a fan of the first two Doom games, agreed to compose the music and sound effects for Doom 3 in 2004, but unfortunately “time and money and bad management came into play and it didn’t work out”. Reznor’s vision for the game was to “create a place that was immersive to the point it wouldn’t need a ‘soundtrack’” and to “visually and aurally create a rich environment you could truly explore and inhabit”. Reznor “tried ‘tuning’ various environmental sound sources so they’d cohesively interact with one another in a ‘musical’ way”.
Although Reznor’s work never found its way into the final game, he later answered a fan’s question about Doom 3 by saying he did play and enjoy the game, emphasising how impressed he was with the development team and calling the game “inspiring”. Doom 3’s theme song was eventually written and recorded by Chris Vrenna of Tweaker, who coincidentally toured with Nine Inch Nails as drummer in the band’s early years.
Last year, Reznor announced that Nine Inch Nails would retire from performing live “for the foreseeable future”, but that he wasn’t finished writing music, and would be involved in a few projects, some NIN-related and some not, including collaborations with Gary Numan and musical involvement in an expectronica band called How To Destroy Angels with his wife Mariqueen Maandig. Another unannounced project could easily be Doom 4’s score.
