Group S Challenge:
I must admit I have grown weary of the racing titles of the new generation. It seems rarely there is a difference, or perhaps that the controls are a bit off. However with the new Capcom title Group S Challenge my racing spirit of old has been rekindled. If you can imagine taking two of the most successful racing games to date, that being Ridge Racer and Gran Turismo, then putting them in a blender and coming out with an amazing product.
This is the case for Capcom’s new racer. It’s fast paced and has an arcade like feel, however the simulation aspects of purchasing cars and tuning them up still exists. This aspect will appeal to all the hardcore motor heads as well as the video game fans who have no clue what a fly wheel is, by the way what exactly is a… never mind, I’m getting off subject.
Group S Challenge will contain two modes of play including Circuit Mode, and Arcade mode. When I popped in this early preview I jumped right into the Circuit mode and was quite happy with what I found. In this mode players are able to maintain a garage of cars all with the ability to buy new parts for as well as rims for that cool look your trying to keep out on the track. Perhaps one my favorite aspects of the garage however is the layout of the car map. As you enter every car is presented on a map like screen all blacked out. The cars you acquire however will be represented. If you enjoy beating a game to its full and getting everything there is to be gotten, this is a collectors dream. No more cycling and writing down will be required. Oh, and did I mention, Group S Challenge features 21 real manufacturers including Dodge, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Fiat, Peugeot, and more!
Once your car is ready to go you can jump into one of three categories which will earn you money and cars. The first is the classic Championship mode. In this mode you select your class starting at C for beginners and ranging up to the S class with all the high end cars. In each class the player will have the ability to compete in single races for cash, or join an all entry to become the champion of the division. In another mode entitled the Line Mode, players will receive more cash for keeping a perfect line on the tracks. This mode is great for fine tuning your racing skills as well as picking up some cash while doing it. The last mode of play is a Duel Mode. This mode will allow the player to go head-to-head with a specified car in hopes of not only beating it, but claiming it for their own. However to do this, gamers must have specific cars in their garage to compete in each of the races. This adds to the replay value of the game as you are required to learn different car’s abilities.
In Group S Challenge gamers can also play the classic arcade mode style of play. In this mode you can race each track against the computer in a normal race, or race one on one with a friend in order to prove who the best of the best truly is. Besides those normal additions, Group S Challenge also features a One Make mode, where each player must drive the same make of car, so the best driver will always win. Lastly, Capcom added a time attack mode to put your best laps up on the score board.
Besides the modes of play, Group S Challenge features beautiful replay’s which can be saved to your Xbox hard drive, then viewed later in the Replay Theater. So if you smoke a friend or pull of a sick lap, you can save it and keep it forever so your friends can actually believe you!
The graphics are looking very good in this early stage and the lighting is superb as well. Capcom also boasts the ability to race through real world race cityscapes such as Australia, Tokyo, and Monaco. Set for a release in August, Group S Challenge is shaping up to be a great racing addition to the Xbox library, and I’ll be waiting to pick up my copy and get back to the racing fever I once had. "
