SPLINTER CELL TO LAUNCH WITH 1 MILLION COPIES
The next game in the Tom Clancy series is going to be a very big deal indeed for Xbox this year: first talk of sequel inside
16:02 Stunning action adventure Splinter Cell is ready to hit hard for Xbox this Christmas, and is emerging as what is likely to be the most successful game on the system over the holiday period.
Ubi Soft today confirmed plans to launch the game, which is based in the anti-terrorist universe of novelist Tom Clancy, with more than 1 million units worldwide. 600,000 copies will hit North America on November 18, with a further 470,000 starting covert operations in Europe and Australia on November 29.
Splinter Cell follows shadowy operative Sam Fisher as he works his way round international hot-spots shooting people in the name of freedom. Sporting a rather fetching jump-suit and enough gadgets to make Q blush, the title garnered unequivocal praise from its first showing at E3 back in May due to some stellar lighting and gameplay features.
The game has now emerged as not only a major title for Ubi Soft, but as the most important Xbox title in both America and Europe for the vital Christmas season.
"As a game it's so very important," said Sara Pelton, group brand manager of Ubi Soft UK. "We're trying to launch a new adult hero with Sam Fisher. Also we're trying to expand the Tom Clancy portfolio - as it's been mainly the Rainbow Six series - and try to take it out of being a really tactical, strategic first-person shooter and make it more mass market."
A follow-up game is obviously more than likely to appear.
"If it's successful there'll definitely be a sequel," Pelton added. "Looking at how people in the know, like the specialist press, have hyped it up, there definitely will be another Splinter Cell."
If you've got an Xbox you'll be buying this game. Even if you haven't there'll be no escape: the British public are about to be bombarded by ads in cinemas during the new Bond movie, on trains and in the London Underground. Chuck in more print ads than you thought humanly possible and you have blanket coverage.
And with a PC version slated for early next year and a PlayStation 2 version in the works, you can bank on seeing plenty more of Mr Fisher yet.
