Xbox 360 has launched worldwide months before Sony has even outlined their plans for PlayStation 3, something Microsoft is clearly proud of. Whether they're able to topple the videogames giant by the end of this console cycle isn't quite as clear, though, and the shaky launch in Japan hasn't boded well for them.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently spoke to Investor's Business Daily and was cautiously optimistic about Xbox 360's future in the land of the rising sun. "I'm not sure we're going to beat Sony in Japan this generation. Maybe," he says. "We knew Japan was going to be tough."
Ballmer noted the rest of the launch was "phenomenal," but you try telling that to all the people who can't buy one.
Ballmer then proceeded to literally rip into Sony for leaving so many unanswered questions about PlayStation 3, especially harping on the lack of a dedicated online service.
"Nobody knows when PlayStation 3 is going to come. The rumours are it will come out in the spring, but only in Japan. And nobody knows what PlayStation 3 is going to cost. PlayStation 3 has a (Blu-ray Disc) drive built in, so who knows what the heck they're going to charge for the thing, because those are very expensive drives. Who the heck knows what the games are going to look like for PlayStation 3? So, a lot of questions. And Sony has no strategy for an online service."
Rumors suggest Sony's ready to start talking next month, and with a full-fledged developer conference in Europe only months off, the unveiling can't be far off.
