SNK revealed exclusively to IGN today that after a long absence from Nintendo's home consoles it has signed up to develop games for Wii, the platform formerly code-named Revolution. SNK's first title for Wii is Metal Slug Anthology, a compilation of classic Metal Slug projects. Best of all, these games have been enhanced to take full advantage of Wii's innovative free-hand style controller, which translates gestures made by players into on-screen movement.
"Fans worldwide have been looking forward to our return to Nintendo platforms and what better way then to bring our complete Metal Slug arcade collection to Wii," SNK Playmore USA Corporation president Ben Herman said in a statement. "The Wii controller will be used in a new and unique way that enhances the gameplay. Our fans have demanded that we support Nintendo platforms. Let the celebration begin."
Hero Rossi is armed and ready to take down any enemy who crosses his path
Metal Slug Anthology will feature such classics as Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4 and Metal Slug 5. SNK has not yet confirmed if Metal Slug 6 will be on the compilation, but that is a very real possibility. The publisher would only officially state: "This will be a full arcade collection including many additional surprises."
A version of Metal Slug Anthology is also expected for Sony's PSP handheld, but the Wii version will obviously boast exclusive controller functionality in addition to any separately added games or features.
The Metal Slug franchise was born to life in 1996 for the now-defunct Neo-Geo console. The arcade shooter took inspiration from the hit Contra series and served up a healthy dose of frantic run-and-gun-style cooperative two-player gameplay. The Metal Slug name describes a massive tank in the game, but much of the side-scrolling missions in the series challenge players to go on foot as Lieutenant Marco Rossi, a tough-guy military leader whose mastery of projectile weapons is second to none.
All of the Metal Slug games retain the original's style: 2D side-scrolling missions with beautiful hand-drawn art. Old-school players even today trumpet the franchise's extremely fluid animation and impressive on-screen carnage.
Further specifics about the Wii version of Metal Slug Anthology will be made available at E3 2006, where the game is expected to be playable in some form. Official screenshots will be released at that time. In the meanwhile, though, SNK has hooked IGN up with several pieces of official Metal Slug Anthology art work. Readers can view the media in our images section below.

Esperemos que no pase como con la supuesta redición de Metal Slugs para GBA...

Wii Need a Revolution; Plus E3 Predictions
Everybody understands how Nintendo's revolutionary new controller is supposed to work. Pick it up and it melts in your hands. It changes the way you play games and once you've tried it, there's no reason to go back.
But does it really work that way? Not necessarily. Theoretically speaking -- I haven't officially played with the controller, after all -- some games are overly sensitive and others lack sensitivity. Finding the sweet spot, if you will, may not be as easy as it sounds, according to developers. Studios can't simply slap basic Wii controller functionality onto their ported games and call it a day. They need to invest some serious effort into the process to do it right.
E3 2006 is about a week away now. Not very long, huh? We've all waited for what seems like forever, but for Nintendo fans, this is a big event. Very big. It has to be Nintendo's proving ground. Does this amazing new machine do what the Big N promises or does it fall short of the company's ambition? We're only a week away now.
I think that by and large it is going to be Nintendo and not the majority of third parties that shows off Wii's true potential. Metroid Prime 3. Super Smash Bros. Legend of Zelda. WarioWare. Donkey Kong. Animal Crossing. Mario?
And every bit as important, brand new IPs. I have the utmost faith that these games are going to stand out and blow us away. And I think the Big N has some surprises in store for us, too. Some pretty cool ones.
Everyone is focused on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Ask any industry outsider about Wii and they'll likely point you to the nearest bathroom. But I'm going to make a prediction that probably goes against the norm: I think Nintendo's new console could walk away from E3 as the big winner -- if the controller does what it's supposed to. If it falters in any way, Wii could be a disaster. But to be clear, I happen to think it's going to impress a lot of people.
Some people are rolling their eyes right now. "Oh, imagine that, the Nintendo editor picks Nintendo to win the show. Who would've thunk it?" I guess that's an easy reply. But it's not exactly true. While I do love Nintendo and the majority of its games, I'm also a gamer, period. I own and play all systems and am quick to point out titles on other consoles that I am intrigued by. Nintendo fans will be the first to say that my infatuation with Too Human on Xbox 360 is unnatural and unhealthy, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm really anticipating it.
I think that both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are going to have amazing shows. But I think that people are simply going to have a lot of fun with Wii. It's so different and so fresh. I think it's this originality that it going to make it so appealing to press -- particularly outsiders looking for something new and exciting. What is Newsweek going to latch onto? Better graphics or a completely new way of playing videogames? I'm betting on the latter.
I'm really looking forward to playing Metroid Prime 3, by the way. I'm such a big Metroid fan and here's the thing: Retro was doing things on Wii last October what third parties with "major" Wii games are only coming to grips with now. I'm expecting Samus to own all competitors.
