TOKYO (AP) - Shigeru Miyamoto, one of Japan's best known video game pioneers, was found dead in his Tokyo apartment today. Creator of such famous characters as Mario and his brother Luigi, he is survived only by his wife and two children. He was 49.
The cause of death is unknown, but doctors suspect it may have been related to the major heart problems that plagued him since childhood.
His widow Yasuko Miyamoto has set up a charity fund in his name that will bring the Internet to third-world countries. She was quoted as saying today, "Shigeru's one dream was to connect the world so that we may all finally see a lasting peace."
