PSU Exclusive: First Look at 2 Days 2 Vegas

Looking for something that might provide a more emotional and story driven experience than Grand Theft Auto? Perhaps a game that makes you feel like the choices you make effect the outcome of the storyline? Then 2 Days 2 Vegas should be at the top spot on your list.

First off, let us just get this out of the way. 2 Days 2 Vegas will appear on the PC and Xbox 360 this Christmas, and then be followed by the PlayStation 3 release soon after in 2009. The reason for moving the PS3 development back is simple.

"Resources," said Tim Dvoskin, managing director at SteelMonkey. "We are too small to tackle everything at once."

However our thoughts are perhaps with more time, the developers will use the PS3 to their advantage, utilizing the Blu-ray format to include more content in the game. It seemed to us that when we spoke with Edwin Loo, the games producer, at GDC 2007, Steel Monkey was excited about the extra storage Blu-ray provided and that they would actually use it.

Now let's talk about the new screenshots. All the images we present today and the videos we show off tomorrow are from a very early build of the game. What you will see is basically the game at 50% completion. To further describe it, such things as ambient filters (lighting, shading, etc) and anti aliasing (smoothing of edges on objects and models) has not been added. Although rest assured, Tim confirmed with us that the game will have both when shown later this year.

Gameplay Demo: Video

2 Days 2 Vegas Tech Demo - Video

- Dynamic shadows
- Diffuse textures
- Normal mapping
- Gloss
- Fresnel Reflection
- Refraction
- Water Effects (turbid water, sun glint, dynamic light)
- Ambient Occlusion
- Point Light
- Projective spotlight
- Mo-cap and animation blending

Once again, there are still some key visual technology not yet implemented. What you are looking at is about 50% of the final quality.

2 Days 2 Vegas Mo-Cap Trailer - Video

Currently Steel Monkey is working with the new generation GypsyGyro-18 MoCap equipment based on gyroscopic sensors. When Steel Monkey was asked what advantages GypsyGyro-18 MoCap has over classical magnet and optic MoCap they stated:

"1. In contrast to optic and magnet MoCap, GypsyGyro-18 doesn’t require an actor’s staying within the usable area limits. It means that shooting can be done both inside and outside the studio (behind the wall, on the other floor, outdoors, etc.). This allows shooting almost any animations – from intense running to driving a car. As to the technical requirements, the shooting area is limited to 100 meters for enclosed spaces and to 300 meters for open spaces.

2. Our equipment is jam-resisted to metal surfaces, which gives great advantage over magnet MoCap which is affected even by the floor fittings, thus impacting the final animation quality.

3. GypsyGyro’s advantage over optic MoCap is absence of the sensors’ overlaying problem. Thus, quality of the two actors’ interaction shooting is the same as shooting of just one actor."

2 Days to Vegas PC Modern Action Adventure Screens TBA
2 Days to Vegas X360 Modern Action Adventure

Hey guys,...it seems that with our announcement this morning, everyone is dieing to see what this game REALLY looks like. Well I figured since the PS3forums are part of PSU and you guys are such a great community that I might leak 1 screenshot from the batch that I will release on Monday.

Sound good? So, before I post the screenshot, I want to let you know that when these screens and videos were taken when the game was only at 50% complete. The developer said that the Ambient Filter has been turned off, so thats why some of these screenshots may look flat. He said that there will be tons of graphical improvements before the game releases....this is just an early look.

*Update: We have added that 2 Days 2 Vegas will appear on the Xbox 360. We have talked with Steel Monkey and it is confirmed that the title will release on both PS3 and Xbox 360 as well as PC. More details on that on Monday.

TrueCrime next gen.
