Ultimately, I think its a bit of a conundrum to write a review tryin to convince you to NOT listen to most reviews but here we are! To get the big stuff out of the way:
The game is flawed, a LOT of flaws. the live service model hurt it very much and the balancing of characters made things feel a bit off (Hulk being squishier than Cap). An array of glitches that can for some, block progression.
While I think this is 100% an audience problem and not a game problem, people disliked the characters not looking like the MCU actors and assumed that was the intent and they "failed" at it. Not hear a peep about the Spider-Man game not looking like any film versions tho, except for when they made Peter look MORE like Tom Holland there was NEGATIVE response. I think this was just something used to sling more insult to a game that had upset people in many ways already.
The campaign is quite good, not Spider-Man open world good but action packed linear story good. There is criticism over Kamala as the pivotal character and she is portrayed phenomenally and earnestly, serving as a POV character for the player in many ways. Sometimes it doesn't FEEL like someone is prejudiced or they just plain deflect and blame something else, but I sincerely think the most hate leveed against her is rooted in your bog standard gamer racism/misoginy.
The enemy variety feels phoned in for most of the experience. It is all mostly robots, robots and MORE robots. Later on you get some human enemies here and there and DIFFERENT robots but it could have done much better with more monstrous enemies.
The combat can get repetitive, yet this is
another thing I think is kind of a paradoxical mindset.
Do you repeat a gameplay loop over and over again? yes. Are there certain moves and actions you need to do to interact with the game constantly? yes. So if Street Fighter isn't considered repetitive because you use the same "combos+movement+blocks+etc" when fighting
another opponent in it's gameplay loop, then this is a case of if you like the way the game feels while fighting and moving around then its fun, if its tedious and repetitive then you just maybe don't like the game.
POSITIVES?!
*whew*! That was what those with reading allergies may call "wall o' text". I know its a lot but I want to be clear with what I say and not get vague for brevity's sake.
The game looks amazing. The look and feel of the characters in the environment and their animations especially with finishers and teamup moves, really gets you feeling in the moment. Traversal especially flight is extremely fun and the fact that you cans till fight while airborne is icing on the cake.
This game shines as a co-op experience. The campaign is good but having a group of friends and playin superheroes together for a session is the feel-good experience the kid in you thanks you for. There's enough heroes at this point to also have some great combos and synergy along with people personally building into the playstyle they love.
Challenges keep things interesting and you have different missions and bounties to do to power up your fave heroes. Even if you are solo, many missions allow you to take a full party of NPC buds composed of other heroes you gear ant spec yourself!
Ultimately, the game could have use some more heroes especially the ones announced or hinted at. There isa great deal of bad choices Squeenix made and a lot was not taken happily by the devs themselves who GENUINELY loved this project but it had to succumb to the bigwigs and backlash. It could have gotten a bit more love but gamers and Marvel fans are ruthless and combining the two was a critical blow.
The game is SUPER cheap, it no longer has any RMT shop or live services and it will fade off sales soon. What is left is a rough gem that still has a bit of shine to it. it is a reasonable get, decent campaign, even better co-op with friends and TONS of costumes for the roster from many eras of comic history.
If you unironically love Marvel, leave your jaded hat at the door and join up with friends you care about that share your love of this IP, I think that you will pleasantly surprised at what a fun time this game can provide!
