me imagino que en otros sistemas habras instalado la aceleracion,el cubo y demas.
yo cuando tenia mandriva,el cubo lo tenia con aiglx,aunque esto no creo que sea del todo relevante.
te puedo decir que con mi antigua tarjeta"una mx400" conseguia tener aceleracion,aunque evidentemente no era para tirar cohetes,pero funcionar funcionaba
de todas formas el driver propietario siempre me dio problemas,asique si lo has desinstalado has hecho bien.
yo de ti empezaria repasando todo el xorg,haber si te falta algo o tienes algo mal.
