Overview:
The PS2 has a manufacturers defect in it. A piece is poorly designed yet it is good enough to last at least 6 months after you buy the machine. This will help you fix that problem.(I have preformed this operation on two PS2 machines so far and brought them both from completely not working to working perfect like brand new)
Repair:
[you need a twist tie, get one that is pretty new and not about to break]
1. remove the small nylon plastic piece. To do this, remove the two small screws at the top of each of the two steel shafts on which the laser slides. This will allow you to turn the laser assembly upside down. Be quite careful not to break the ribbon cable and also not to touch the laser lens on anything when you turn it over. One very small screw holds the white nylon plastic piece on, remove it.
2. strip all the paper or plastic off the twist tie
3. look on the underside of the nylon plastic piece, there are two tracks which are supposed to seat in the screw shaft. Make a very small hole right in the middle of them, just big enough for a twist tie wire to fit through(I used my knife, a safety pin would probably work).
4. make sure the twist tie fits into the hole, then take it out.
5. put the white nylon plastic piece back onto the laser assembly. Then put the shafts back into the laser assembly and remount the laser. Screw down the small screws at the top of the shafts that the laser slides on.
6. you should now have the laser assembly back together with the white nylon plastic piece seated in the grooves just like its supposed to, except that there is now a hole in the plastic piece.
7. now is the tricky part. Thread the twist tie down through the hole in the plastic piece staying to the left of the screw shaft. then thread it under the screw shaft to the right. Then bring it back up so that you have made a loop around the plastic piece and screw shaft. Twist the two ends together and cut it off about a quarter inch. What this does is serves to hold the plastic piece down to the screw shaft so it cannot skip and jump out of the grooves.
8. this is going to take some adjustment. Carefully slide the laser assembly to the top with the machine off. Then turn it on and see how well it tracks. You may have to do this several times loosening or tightening the twist tie to get a good smooth movement in the laser. You definitely don’t want to make it too tight where the motor cant even turn to move te laser. This is bad. It could burn up your motor. So slightly loose is better.
9. bend the twist tie down a little just to make sure it doesn’t scrape the cd tray when it is opening and closing.
10. Its fixed
