"PS2 Price Drops In Japan
Will the US follow suit?
November 18, 2002 - SCE today announced a series of moves intended to increase sales of PlayStation 2 hardware through the coming holiday season in Japan. The company plans to lower the wholesale price of the system by several thousand yen, according to a report by Bloomberg, which should encourage retailers to lower the street price in turn (since the PS2 console has no fixed retail price in Japan).
Meanwhile, Sony also announced plans to sell a bundle version of the PS2 with Ratchet & Clank when the game is released in Japan on December 3. The "Ratchet & Clank Action Pack" is to be sold for 26,800 yen, just 2,000 yen more than the current accepted price for the PS2 console in Japan.
These price reductions can be traced to the same factor -- on November 21, Sony is releasing a new version of the console on the Japanese market, the SCPH-39000. The new revision of the hardware has redesigned internals and takes advantage of cheaper manufacturing techniques, allowing Sony to produce it at lower cost.
It's not known whether the Japanese price drop will be followed by a similar reduction in the US or European markets, but we'll report on any such news as soon as it arises."
