Sony Announces Ramayan 3392 A.D., Indian-themed MMO for World-wide Release
by Nick Breckon Aug 09, 2007 11:43am CST
With China getting its own Western-developed MMO, the world's second most populous country is now being targeted as well.
Sony Online Entertainment today announced it will be bringing an MMO based on Virgin Comics' Ramayan 3392 A.D. universe to the PC. Aiming for a global 2010 release, a Sony representative told Shacknews that the game is primarily being targeted to a Indian gamers, but is also being made available world-wide.
Ramayan 3392 A.D. is based on the ancient Sanskrit epic Ramayana. The story follows a battle between humans and demons in a post-apocalyptic world. The comic was written by Shamik Dasgupta with illustrations by Abhishek Singh, and was based on a story by author Deepak Chopra and Elizabeth (1998) director Shekhar Kapur.
"Virgin Comics approached us with a portfolio of amazing comic properties based on Indian lore," said SOE president John Smedley. "We particularly love Ramayan 3392 A.D., as we feel Virgin Comics telling of The Ramayana is particularly gripping, graphically brilliant and lends itself extremely well to an MMO."
Virgim Comics creative head Gotham Chopra labeled SOE as "awesome" for transforming their work into a massive multiplayer game. "In a world increasingly dominated with games influenced by a western Tolkien mythos, Ramayan will offer gamers a chance to experience a whole new universe of characters and archetypes derived from one of the oldest cultures on Earth," he added in a release. "Our mission at Virgin Comics has always been to allow this generation of Indian youth to have a creative platform through which to speak to the world. Through this collaboration with the likeminded visionaries at SOE, our young Indian creators will make gaming history worldwide."
It's hard to blame SOE for targeting a population of over 1 billion, and they may kill two audiences with one game if the Eastern perspective offers an interesting variation for Western gamers. Just leave out the post-apocalyptic grinding, please.
