One thing the other two consoles, Xbox and PS2, have that GameCube lacks is a popular racing sim franchise. The Xbox has Project Gotham Racing, and the PS2 has the Gran Turismo series. While there have been rumors that the cancelled N64 Nintendo racing sim, Rev Limit, was back in development, it appears this may no longer be...true? If this rumor is correct, Nintendo plans to change all this, because apparently Nintendo has purchased the Top Gear franchise, which has roots with Nintendo far back to the NES and SNES. Cool.
EAD Ninja seems to claim that NST is possibly currently developing a new title in the Punch-Out series for the GameCube. He also went on to mention previous rumors reported here on titles such as a new Pilotwings also being in development for GameCube.
Denis Dyack, president of Silicon Knights [creators of Eternal Darkness and currently developing a GameCube Metal Gear Solid title with Konami], recently hinted at Kid Icarus in an interview in GamePro magazine:
"GP: What other games would you like to re-make in the same way as Metal Gear Solid?
DD: I would say Resident Evil but that has already been done. There are many games that I would like to see this done to but if I were to say one it would probably be Kid Icarus."
It may seem like 'nothing', but I recall Denis Dyack hinting at Metal Gear Solid in an interview long before Twin Snakes was confirmed to be in development by Silicon Knights in the same exact same manner as this. Take it with a grain of salt.
Kid Icarus is an old NES platformer, starring a winged character named Pit, that was more of a vertical-scrolling game then a side-scroller. It has fairly recently been popular amoung old school fans in terms of getting long overdue sequel for the new generation of consoles.
According to Retro Studios, developers of the award winning Metroid Prime, they mentioned that they "have not cancelled any of their titles, and still have all the materials for all of their titles." Does this mean we will be playing Raven Blade and Thunder Rally in 2004? These games were thought to be cancelled over a year ago when Retro Studios took the overwhelming task of developing a new Metroid title. Thunder Rally was a car combat game, Raven Blade was a traditional and gorgeous RPG, and there was also rumors of sports titles in the works.
GameCube Land reports that Konami will be bringing one of their old franchises to the GameCube, to be unveiled at E3 2004...This is of course just a rumor, but I wonder if it's another collaboration between Nintendo and Konami? As to what franchise it could be, we have no clue, but I'm praying for a new exclusive Contra...If any of this is true...Please remember, this is just a rumor!
AOL and Nintendo working on something big? That's the rumor (and from a well-placed source). Supposedly a Pokemon online game is currently in development (I know, I know, it seems every week one is), but here's the kicker: it's going to be free to play online. Oh, and apparently this game is only the beginning...
A while back we reported the rumor of an update to Capcom's classic UN Squadron being in development for next-gen consoles. Let's just say I've been hearing some talk that we should be hearing something on this matter soon.
What's up with Square-Enix? Sure the GBA is getting it's share of support from the company, but what about everyone's favorite cubed console? With Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles currently out in Japan, and soon to be released in America, rumor has Square-Enix will soon unveil it's next Gamecube project. Not wanting to take the lime light away from it's first Nintendo console project in years, Square-Enix is going to wait until the time is right. The game? Wait...who said it was just one game?
Mas leña al fuego de Kid Ikarus...
Those familiar with Mr. Dyack’s language and comments from the past will know that some sort of cryptic message is actually being said here. What is it, you ask? I can't say with 100% certainty, so I really feel that I can’t outright tell you what it is. However, I will give you a huge hint. Both Socrates and Aristotle are well known figures of Greek philosophy, and it just so happens that Nintendo has a little known game starring an angel in a land based on Greek mythology…"
