"April 4, 2005 - In one of the more intriguing uses of the PlayStation Portable's easy connectivity features between the hardware and home PC systems, FromSoft officially announced today a new software tool that, in conjunction with some PSP software and a Memory Stick to exchange the data, can be used by both pros and novices to create their own adventure games for play on the handheld.
Called Adventure Player, the new software is a two-piece kit: a UMD game disc for playing adventures saved to Memory Stick Duo on PSP, and a downloadable PC software tool that can be used to create adventure games. Software will be created for the PSP UMD game app by professional adventure creators (three games will be included in the UMD, including two FromSoft originals and a new version of the first Echo Night), and independent adventure designers will also be able to create their own games for download and play. It was not made clear at the announcement event whether there would be an official download service from inside the PSP over Infrastructure Mode, but with the files for Adventure Player easily added to a Memory Stick, plans are for continuing chapters of games and for user-crafted adventure creations to be available over the web or even by email.
The software for creating games is mostly designed for text based adventure games in the "Play Novel" tradition. However, the software for creating games is fairly robust, and allows for game creators to design puzzles and add design elements to their games. Still pictures and sound effects can be laid out through the game, and a scripting language has been included to design puzzles or add more complicated game elements. Adventure games are the most obvious creations to expect out of the software, but there are already projects underway to use the software for quiz games, love sims (including one already in the works where you learn how to 'date' Japanese idol girls) , and an English-language tutorial.
