Shares of the Markham, Ontario-based graphics chip maker jumped as much as 13 percent to their highest level since March, 2002. By mid-afternoon the stock was up 80 cents at $13.05 on Nasdaq on a volume of more than 14 million shares. In Toronto, it rose C$1.27 to C$18.19 and was the exchange's third most active issue.
Nvidia's stock fell 63 cents, or almost 4 percent, to $16.15 on Nasdaq with 10 million shares traded.
ATI said the deal with the world's largest software maker will see it develop custom, leading-edge graphics technologies for use in future Xbox products and services. Graphics chips for the Xbox are currently provided by Nvidia.
