Question
Does GIMP really support Photoshop filter factory filters?
Answer
Take a look at this directory: filtersuser filter (it's at the top of the list, having moved from previous releases) this will bring up the amazing User filter. you can read more about it here, from it's author: and also see:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Way/3340/gimp.html Well, the user filter uses .FFL files which you can find in some abundance here:
http://showcase.netins.net/web/wolf359/plugins.htm Download these files, and put them into: ..GIMPuserfilter there's probably already a few in there. incidentally, .FFL files are just plain text info, and if you felt so inclined you could open them up in, say, notepad and see what makes them tick. The .FFL format was developed for photoshop. it was widely accepted soon after. ANOTHER format available for the userfilter is the .8BF which was also developed for photoshop. you can NOT grab any old .8BF file from photoshop, put it in your userfilter directory, and use it. It works only for those .8bf file which in fact are binary translations of a filter-factory filter. The .8bf file (which actually is a DLL) contains the same text as the corresponding .ffl file would, in addition to machine code compiled from the filter description. The user_filter plug-in reads this textual description from the .8bf file. .8bf files in general are PhotoShop plug-in filters, which the user_filter plug-in (or GIMP) doesn't understand anything of.
