Chishm’s Firmware Hack
Out of the box, the GBAMP does not allow you to run NDS homebrew applications. First the firmware must be updated. The GBAMP will retain its ability to use movies, games etc. WARNING: The Movie Advance Team do not support the following firmware ‘hack’. Therefore, they will not give help if you ruin your GBAMP as a result of this update (which is possible, but unlikely). It will also void the warranty (if you had one) of the GBAMP. Chishm has released a firmware hack allowing the GBAMP to run homebrew NDS files. It will not allow you to play any commercial ROMs or Game Backups, There are currently two versions of the new firmware.
Version 1 (the original version) has more hassles involved, but has proven stability. Its major downside is that it requires you to defragment your compact flash card every time you change homebrew. In order to use a homebrew file, you must copy it to the root directory of the card, and rename it _BOOT_MP.nds. To use GBA homebrew, put a (multiboot) game on your CF card and rename it _BOOT_MP.gba. NOTE: Some of the newer homebrew apps (e.g. Moonshell) may not work on the version one hack.
Version 2 (the newest hack) has eliminated the need for a lot of things, like defragmenting the card and _BOOT_MP.gba. At the current time (5th of Jan, 2006) the most recent version is 2.04. To use, just copy your homebrew app to the CF card, and rename it _BOOT_MP.nds. To run GBA homebrew, copy your file to the CF card and choose it in the FC Game menu of the movie player in GBA mode. The downside of the second version update is that it has more risk to your player. But the GBAMP is very resilient and can be repaired from most things.
To use the firmware update, copy the ndsmp.gba or ndsmp.nds from Chism's GBAMP site and place it in your CF card. Run it under the FC Game menu (for the .gba) or via WifiMe/PassMe/FlashMe (for the .nds). choose to run the bootloader and wait until you get a confirmation message. Switch off your DS, insert your PassMe (if you need to) and put your new files on you Compact Flash Card. You're all set to run homebrew!
Not all homebrew works on the GBAMP. There are a few limitations, as follows:
Since the GBAMP doesn't have any internal RAM, and the CF card is not memory mapped, the homebrew app has to be loaded into the DS's RAM first. Seeing as the DS only has 4MB of RAM, you can only run files under thi size on the GBAMP.
Most DS homebrew games save to the SRAM of FlashCarts. But the GBAMP has no SRAM. This means unless the homebrew is specifically made to save to the Compact Flash card, you cannot save.
Not all homebrew works. The GBAMP hack cannot run some homebrew even if it is smaller than 4MB in size and doesn't save to SRAM. Reading off the CF card is different then reading off a FlashCart, and it just doesn't work with some things.
NOTE: Chism's firmware hack does not work on GBAMP Version 1 or GBAMP SD.
