Before Star Wars was The Star Wars, an unproduced screenplay written by George Lucas three years before the first movie debuted in 1977. Now, that early work will be realized as a comic book from Dark Horse, with an eight-issue miniseries starting in September.
The Star Wars contains numerous significant differences from the famous franchise. In their press release, Dark Horse calls it, "a tale of fantastic adventures, daring escapes, 'lazer swords,' romance, and monsters. A story of Jedi Annikin Starkiller and General Luke Skywalker, an alien named Han Solo, and evil Sith Knights."
Dark Horse's The Star Wars will be written by LucasBooks executive editor J.W. Rinzler and illustrated by Mike Mayhew, known for his work on multiple Marvel projects.
"While researching in the Lucasfilm Archives I've found many treasures — but one which truly astounded me was George's rough draft for The Star Wars," Rinzler said in Dark Horse's statement. "His first complete imaginings were hallucinating to read — mind blowing. While working with George on another book project, I once asked if we could adapt his rough draft. He was hesitant. Years later, with Dark Horse's invaluable help, we showed him a few drawn and colored pages of what it might look like. He gave us the okay."
The announcement signifies that the Star Wars license is likely to stay at Dark Horse into 2014, despite Star Wars and Marvel now both being under Disney's corporate umbrella.
IDW is the home of licensed properties like G.I. Joe, Transformers, My Little Pony, Judge Dredd, Doctor Who and — as of June — The X-Files, plus creator-owned books and highly touted collected editions.
Waid most recently penned the adventures of Cliff Secord in "Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom" with his current "Daredevil" partner, artist Chris Samnee. This will mark the first time he's written Will Eisner's classic character The Spirit and the first time the character has appeared in new stories since DC Comics' last "Spirit" title ended in 2008.

Dynamite Entertainment proudly announces that Black Bat #1, the first issue of an ongoing series reinventing the classic masked vigilante, will debut in May 2013 and combine the storytelling talents of writer Brian Buccellato (DC's Flash) and interior artist Ronan Cliquet (Green Hornet, The Shadow Special). Bolstered by the character's appearance in Masks, one of 2012's best-selling independent comics, the pulp hero's solo series debut welcomes a host of superstar artists aboard for cover art duties, including J. Scott Campbell, Joe Benitez, Ardian Syaf, Billy Tan, and in his Dynamite cover artwork debut, award-winning artist Marcos Martin!
Black Bat brings back a classic pulp hero from the 1930s, a seminal character that inspired several well-known comic icons. Now, Tony Quinn is a brash defense attorney for the mob, one who compromises his ethics for financial gain. However, when he refuses to cross the line and commit murder, he is tortured and blinded by his gangster employers. But then, a fortuitous meeting with a covert agency gives him a chance to make amends, and Tony dons the dark mantle of the Black Bat in his redemptive quest to right the wrongs of his past.
Brian Buccellato, whose work on the DC speedster title Flash has gained rave reviews from fans and critics alike, was announced at New York Comic-con 2012 as the writer steering the Black Bat revival. The red-hot writer eagerly shared his excitement about Black Bat's atmospheric setting, and the creative opportunities he'll explore there. "Anyone familiar with my self-published work, Foster, knows that I enjoy exploring dark worlds, flawed characters, and redemption. Black Bat covers some of that ground. At the same time, it's still a superhero book and isn't a departure from my work on Flash. Tonally, I'd like to think it merges the gap between those two worlds."
