Usas gnome, ¿no? Instala gnome-volume-manager y añádete al grupo storage.

Para lo primero a mi tambien me pasaba, puedes copiar el xorg? (esta en /etc/X11/xorg.conf).
No estoy seguro de como lo arregle porque hice dos cosas, la primera un pacman -Syu que me actualizo los drivers de la tarjeta. La segunda es que descomente unas lineas del xorg, pegalo y asi miro si falta algo.

A mi me salia una entrada mas que era load "dry". En el wiki de arch linux dice que tiene que estar comentada pero yo ya estaba cansado de que se colgara al iniciar y la descomenté por probar. Con eso y el paquete de drivers que se me instalo con pacman -Syu ya va bien.
Si quieres probar haz una copia del xorg antes, asi si pasa algo lo arreglas.
PD: por cierto amuchamu, como creaste el xorg? A mi el hwd siempre me crea los xorg tochos xD.

Bueno bueno, eso simepre que se preocuparan de solucionar los bugs de cada versión en la siguiente. Yo desde los 8.5 cada vez que habilito compiz la pantalla me empieza a soltar unos glitches gráficos impresionantes, parte de los cuales se quedan ahí como pequeñas rayitas horizontales diseminadas por todas partes.
