Sony, IBM and Toshiba have entered a joined effort to create a new processor codenamed "[The] Cell" (obviously for its use of IBM's technology from the SiGe chip - mixed Germanium and Silicium which combined uses far less energy than todays "only" Silicium chips). They actually try to use cobber threads to gain an as low as 0.1 my silicium transistors, at a much lower volt usage than normal CPU's.
The costs of this project is already a combined 3.4$ Billion, and it is stated that this new processor technology will ultimately top in the 110-120GHZ.
It is said to go (though not in the high GHZ) retail in 2003, though nothing is confirmed as of yet.
The ultimately purpose of this new technology is an entirely new Operating System, also a joined effort by above mentioned firms.
Sony, however, wants to utilize the chip in their new playstation, as funky states.
Whether there will be a 110GHZ processor in their upcomming [2005 at earliest] remains to be seen.
