Bueno, no es ningun programa, es un estilo GTK llamado Oxygen-GTK, que esta hecho para ser igual que el tema Oxygen usado por defecto en KDE Plasma. Si no usas Oxygen no te servira de mucho xD

Gnome3 tiene 2 modos, el normal con gnome shell, que necesita aceleración gráfica, y el "fallback", similar a gnome2. En tu instalación de virtualbox no tienes aceleración gráfica así que sólo puede arrancar en el modo fallback.

xine? usas kde, no? kaffeine me imagino que hará uso de phonon, y el backend de xine está descontinuado, prueba a usar vlc, o gstreamer

No tengo una ati así que no te sé decir más. Para RSS ahora uso Google Reader (la web, no un programa), durante años usé liferea pero no sé qué tal andará ahora. Para twitter, un amigo usa pino y he oído acerca de gwibber y turpial. No uso twitter así que tampoco te sé decir.

Muchas gracias. El problema de reescalado de frecuencia era que no me dejaba el kernel hacerlo, pero bueno, encontré una BIOS modificada para mi netbook que me lo permite, así que perfecto.
Respecto a twitter, turpial me ha gustado bastante, pero bueno, probaré otros a ver si me convencen más o menos
