If you do a google search for "ps3" and "rtc", you will find that a fellow gamer already worked out what the problem is:
"Alright guys. We figured out how to fix this issue. You have to pull out the Real Time Clock battery for 10 minutes. The main problem is that the Real Time Clock handled by syscon is out of sync with the system clock and that newer models are not affected because they have an up to date syscon firmware that appears to have this bug fixed. All Sony needs to do to fix this problem is to provide a syscon update. You can do this to fix it if things have screwed up for you or you can wait a couple days until your system reaches March 1st. This has been tested." --- quoted from "Mathieulh" on an IRC channel.
There are several SYS_CON firmware packages in the updates based on which hardware chips they support:
SYS_CON_FIRMWARE_01000005.pkg
SYS_CON_FIRMWARE_01010302.pkg
SYS_CON_FIRMWARE_S1_00010002083E0832.pkg
The first 2 packages have been around a very long time (I only went as far back as FW 1.90, and both were present). The third package is new for the SLIM, and that's why the SLIM is not affected. The data supports this gamer's hypothesis and fix.
Because the PS3 uses digital signatures for encryption and validation, having an invalid system date before the digital signature is valid will cause an error. Even for game disc and downloaded content played offline. Your digital signature and license wasn't valid on 12/31/1999. So, likely when the real March 2, 2010 hits, and the PS3 rolls from Feb 29 to March 1 (effectively your PS3 will be off by one day), the system will show that it's march 1, or you will have to go in an manually update it.
I doubt Sony can release an update to fix the problem until the PS3 has some semblance of a current date (even off by 1 day), because the firmware updates use digital certificates as well. But when they do, we can look at the SYS_CON packages and see that they were updated. My guess is that the first 2 packages will be corrected, and the third does not have to be modified. Unless you want to take the risk that Sony will still fix your PS3 after you break the warranty seal (assuming it breaks through wear-tear one day), I would not recommend opening up the case.
I don't know what will happen to any data (trophies, saves, etc) that gets created or timestamped with the 12/31/1999 date. We'll all just have to wait and see. I for one won't be turning on my PS3 today (and it was off yesterday).
