Whoa, I've just found this topic, and I already love it! I think is a great idea, beacuse we all need in one way or another to practice english, and this is a great way to do so.

I'm going to do my final exams of technical english soon, so this will surely help me quite a lot. I'm Studing Computer engenieering, does anyone know it Technical English final exams are hard?

Hi guys, you OK?

There´s been a lot of discussion regarding the viewing of sitcoms and films as an effective mean to improve our english. What I´ve noticed , though, is that a lot of british sticoms have been recomended, some great ones (The IT crowd) and some not so great (Little Britan...), but I have never come across anyone recomending Peep Show, which I find completely excruciating as it probably remains as the best british comedy of all time.

I´m also baffled by the fact that no one has provided a translation which could help some people understand and enjoy this brilliant TV show. Closest thing I´ve found is an SRT file for the first episode, and if I´m brutally honest with you, i have to say that it was quite a lousy job and a very poor attempt, full of mistranslations, been unable to convey some of the expressions and idioms of the british slang... . And for that reason I have put myself forward to translate the first episode and hopefully, the six seasons if there´s happen to be a good reception about it. I´ve only translated the first episode so far and it probably needs a few tweaks, but overall I tihnk I´ve done a decent job, so don´t be too harsh on me [ginyo]. So please, do leave some feedback to decide whether it´s worthwhile translating the six seasons or not.

Little Britain is a parody of the actual British society, so, if you are not British, maybe you will not find it funny. Something similiar happens when you see typical basque shows like WAZEMANK xD.
I'm sorry but i have to disagree with peepshow being the best british comedy show of all time. It is good alright, but it is just 2 pathetic guys trying to justify themselves in their daily fiascoes, quite funny sometimes but not all the time. Calling it the best comedy show of all time is a bit too much. Well, way too much.

-The office is way over peepshow.
-So, in my opinion, is the mighty boosh.
-If we include Ireland in your concept of british (as per British isles, a geographic term that is still used outside of the islands), Father ted would be probably on top of the rest.
-Bottom was for me a brilliant, crazy show back in the day as well (I remember it was called la pandilla basura in spain, broadcasted by canal +)

If you watch american stuff also, I suggest you to give a go at "curb your enthusiasm"

I´m very aware of the cultural references in Little Britain, I´ve been living here long enough to get them. And yes, I know that it´s supposed to resemble Britain and british people, but I struggle to find any intelligence or sarcasm in the cheap sketches, they are repetetive, boring and not funny at all.

Well, surely we don´t have to agree on that, but I genuinely believe it is the best british series of all time, I think it´s got a lot of wit, sarcsm, intelligence... and I don´t think it´s only me who thinks so, I mean, the 9.5 score on IMDB and the several british awards that it has won, speak for themselves.

I´ve never liked The Office to be honest, in fact I think that the american version outshines the british one, though I´m not a big fan of it, anyway. The mighty boosh is just ok but way too surrealistic, on the verge of being ridiculous for my liking, and ditto to Father Ted, at least we agree on that one XD.

Where have you found english subtittles? Foreing trackers? Cause in spanish trackers everything i've come across are dual and spanish subtittled series, o "vose" if you are lucky.

cool, fantastic idea, I´ll try to improve my english here, and if anybody have a doubt or question about gramatic, just tell us, and we try to answer, as soon as posible.

P.d. I´ve just pased my last exam of english, I´m learing english for 3 years, but I hope to speak and write well better here. (well speak here, It could be a little dificult)

Do you mean that if I open 1 serie with bsplayer, the program will found english subtittles on its own? And how? What do I have to do? Where is that option?
On the other hand, have you guys ever watched a Spanish movie with English subtitles? I guess it's not the most common thing among Spanish speakers but it's the way most foreigners watch Spanish productions.

I have only had the chance to watch one though. My girlfriend is learning Spanish, so I thought to watch a Spanish movies with English subtitles could help her a bit since she is not that fluent speaking. We watched "Celda 211" and I would say the subtitles were not... suitable in every case.

As you probably know, the plot of the movie occurs in a prison, where kind of slang language is spoken by almost all the characters. They were translating literally almost all the expressions, as for example:

"Lo mejor de todas las casas" = "The best of every house"

Maybe that expression has the same meaning in English, but what I'd like to say is that they were doing it all the time. I was laughing quite a lot but, that's quite a poor translation and I think Spanish movies should improve this aspect in order to get more fans abroad.

This movie, I think it´s very dificult, to translate, every phrase with another expression in english...
but, I watched several spanish movies with sub. in English and most of them, don´t know how to translate this word well.
Well, you have to realise that spanish is a very rich language (think about the huge amount of "sayings" we have), so I think in a lot of cases there is no translation. The same happens in some cases when you want to translate english expressions to spanish, though.

Yea, for example, if the video you have downloaded is a scene release (for example: SIMPSON.SE20E21.HDTV.XVID.BLUELLES (this release name is fictional, do not try to find it on the internet) the program will check its own database, and search the subtitles that are available on the main subtitles sources of the net.

I think that KXPlayer has the same option actually. Anyway, there are some pages where you can find a lot of subtitles in a lot of diferent languages. SOmetimes you have to adjust the FPS or the delay, but i'ts really easy and normally works really well.

I also think that this topic is a really good idea. Actually I have an Erasmus scholarship (grant?) and I am improving my english hell of a lot. I am really happy ;).

The only problem I have is that i learnt english basically reading forums in english, so my grammar sucks XD . Anybody knows a book which is good to learn grammar? If it's possible starting with beginners level.

Just open the video file with Bsplayer, and the program will check if you are connected to the internet. If it has success, it will start chekcking for subtitles, as I told you earlier.
Meh, thread closed (hilo_vale-la-pena-traducir-peep-show_1437064). I saw it coming, though, and it´s something that does my head in, to be honest. It´s compeltely ludicrous that we are banned from talking about films and sitcoms whilst CINeol is a completely different website from this one, can´t get my head around it, to be fair. But there you go, I´m not going to go on about it, at least I recieved some feedback that will encourage me to carry on with my work.

it's similar to "me rompe la cabeza" (to use the same word on a similar way). I guess it can be used if someone is talking to you on and on and you get upset.

although on that sentence I think the best translation would be "es algo que me toca los huevos". [carcajad]

Finishing the second episode at the moment, and I have taken on board Tony Skyrunner´s suggestion on spelling and structure, so now I´m paying more attention to detail so I can deliver something which is up to scratch.

I haven't seen Peep Show yet, but I will, sounds pretty interesting. I loved Little britain, it makes me remember "los morancos" , but british.
Another series that is worth at least a try is the inbetweeners, a group of four teenagers and their (mis)adventures. Oh, and i would definitely give a go at shameless, the story revolves around a fictional marginal neighborhood in Manchester, the characters are basically chavs and other scum, the storytelling in this case is like a roller coaster, it can go from funny to dark and back, but i think it shows quite well the morality that reigns between that kind of people. Duende, you live in england, I assume you understand what I'm talking about.

Heh... Reading "TOS" makes me think of "Terms of Service"... definitely not very catchy.

The Other Side makes me think of Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is all sorts of cool. [ok]

I've recently finished The Wire's 4º Season...pure awesomeness, really.
If anyone of you have already seen it, I think we'll agree that Omar is a HELL of a character, probably one of the more charismatic guys out there in a Tv show
Grammar is not overrated. You need to know a good bit in order to answer emails in english and so on, which is very normal nowadays.

Every now and then I receive emails from people with no/low education and you can see the difference in grammar and literary construction. And I'm talking about native speakers, since i work surrounded by guiris. Well actually I'm the guiri here, but since they are the freckled ones, THEY are!
I know I know, I was joking. :) It's just the majority of young native English speakers prowling around on the Internet have atrocious grammar (and don't get me started on spelling). I'm sure many of you people posting on this thread have had a native compliment you on your English and saying it's better than theirs, I see it happening all the time.

Everyone (native or not) should strive for perfecting their knowledge of the language and using it as correctly as possible. I know I do. Sadly, loads of people consider that grammar is indeed overrated, especially on the Internet.

You see the same problem with young people in every language/country. I don't know if it's the need of belonging or what, but it's common knowledge that kids or teens tend to use slang between themselves, in order to be cool and so, and you can even see some that have 2 ways of speaking, 1 at home and 1 with the friends.

I think your knowledge should be aimed to a wide interaction, broadening your vocabulary with words in different dialects, slang and new (teeny, lets say) words, in order to have an extended understanding of the same language in different situations. Reading helps a lot, writing as well, watching movies, etc. Also it is very important to be able to differentiate and use the proper english depending of the situation. A work email or an email to a friend, talking to someone you know or a stranger, etc.

Let's say that grammar counts in your professional life and social (polite) interaction, whereas slang/dialect/etc is used in a more known environment (friends, workmates, and so on).
