Following the posting of a timer on carmageddon.com at the weekend, VG247 has learned that the Carmageddon series is about to be rebooted, but that it’s an independent project.
A source familiar with the matter said that Square Enix has nothing to do with the next in the Carmageddon series.
All rights to the action IP have been negotiated away from Square, owner of original publisher Eidos. The Carmegeddon website is not owned by Square Enix, contrary to reports over the weekend.
The game will be announced before E3, but won’t be on show in LA. The site counter points to June 1, so you can probably work out when you’re going to get a first look at it without overly taxing your teeny brain.
While the new game’s developer is not confirmed, original studio Stainless is now concerned with producing downloadable titles based on existing IP, such as Magic: The Gathering and Risk.
Carmageddon first released in 1997, and achieved notoriety by getting censored in many countries, including the UK and Germany.
Gameplay is centred on post-apocalypse car racing, but players can achieve higher scores by killing pedestrians.
Stainless produced a 1998 sequel, Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now. A third entry, Carmageddon TDR 2000, was developed by Torus Games in 2000. All three saw broad multi-platform release.
As Bayonetta director, Hideki Kamiya, continues his director commentary on the game, we learn what hopes Kamiya has for the franchise. One of these is a spin-off game starring Jeanne.
“I’m sure those of you who’ve unlocked the special features know about Cutie J,” says Kamiya, while going through the sequence with Jeanne and Bayonetta, early in the game. “She’s Jeanne as a heroine, who would star in a spin-off game I like to fantasize about.”
Another idea Kamiya has is revisiting the period prior to the war between the Sages and the Witches, with a younger Balder. You can listen to these quotes and other commentary in his latest director commentary video above.
None of these quotes equate to actual games in development, of course, but it’s still interesting to see what ideas Kamiya has floating around in his head.
Hideo Kojima has hinted at a potential cancellation from Kojima Productions, saying a “thing” that the Metal Gear Solid creator has spent the past year on has now become “meaningless”.
“The thing that I spent one year delicately preparing became meaningless,” he said in a tweet first on his Japanese Twitter, as translated by VG247 contributor Alex Donaldson, before being posted on his English Twitter.
He added before that: “I can’t take it anymore; this is unbearable, I can’t stay positive.”
If a project inside Kojima Productions has been canned, it’s unknown what said “thing’ could be affected.
MGS: Rising or MGS 3DS? Very unlikely, gringo. NGP project? Again, unlikely: he’s due to show it off next month in LA. His “devil project”? We haven’t heard anything on that for a while. Zone of the Enders 3? Not even in development right now.
Watch for E3 or TGS to see if there’s any clues as to what it might be.
With the announcement of the PSP Remaster , this range will allow the best PSP games to be out lifter in HD on PlayStation 3, everyone has already begun to establish his little wish list. In these lists, a candidate comes up quite naturally: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker , one of the biggest games of the PSP, and an episode that takes the comparison with the AMS lounge. Those who missed this excellent track lacked a PSP will indeed entitled to their follow-up session on PS3. In addition to various opinion polls conducted by Konami on this issue, we are now able to confirm that Peace Walker will be announced at E3 2011 in a PS3 version, certainly within the range Remaster PSP. To recall, in addition to lifting HD, a PSP game Remaster enjoys a gameplay adapted to the Dual Shock (use the right stick absent on PSP). Yet to discover the price positioning of these titles (over 30 euros, the approach may be frowned upon) and their delivery method (Blu-ray is not impossible, but the download seems more appropriate).

Capcom appears to have another new IP in the works on top of Dragon’s Dogma and Asura’s Wrath. There’s a trademark for Ixion Saga filed by Capcom in Japan.
While this may bring up memories of an electric unicorn, I believe Capcom’s Ixion Saga is tied to the blasphemous Greek mythology character. Ixion killed his father in law, was branded an outlaw for committing the first act of murder, and then made a pass for Zeus’ wife after the king of the gods invited him to Olympus out of pity. Things… did not go well for Ixion afterwards. As punishment, Ixion was tied to a fiery wheel to burn for all of eternity.
If Capcom sticks to the source material don’t count on Ixion Saga being a family friendly game.
In addition to the trademark, Capcom also registered a domain for ixion-saga.com, which currently points nowhere. Perhaps, this is an announcement further down the road? It took half a year for Capcom to reveal Dragon’s Dogma after we discovered a trademark for it.

Hypeeeee
Hothead Games has announced a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy game.
The quirky press release offers no game platforms, details, nor release date.
Hothead Games developed the Penny Arcade Adventures series of colourful turn-based RPGs; the two action-packed Deathspank RPGs; and Swarm, a recently released control-a-horde action strategy game.
Remember Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare? Infogrames published the game on the PC, PlayStation and PlayStation 2, way back in 2001. That title is now headed to the PlayStation 3, with Sony as its publisher.
The ESRB rated Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare for the PlayStation 3 today, giving it an “M” rating. There’s no rating summary to read, but the content descriptors include Blood and Gore, and Violence. There’s a chance this could be a PSOne Classics download via PlayStation Network, but the ESRB don’t include the PSP as a platform.
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare lets you play as two characters, Edward and Aline, with each one’s route focused on a different kind of experience. Edward’s is more action-oriented, while Aline’s focuses more on puzzles.
Hothead games has announced a new DeathSpank adventure which tasks our hero with finding the Fires of Bacon and destroying the evil power of the thongs.
In “The Baconing”, DeathSpank goes up against Anti-Spank and meets up with new acquaintances and old friends along the way.
The new adventure includes four new bosses like the Minorque, a new insane difficulty level, and new locations like The Forbidden Zone, The Forest of Tomorrow, Barnacle Lake and others.
A new sidekick named Bob From Marketing seems volatile, as he can shoot “laser eye beams; eat dead bodies to restore health; and eat live bodies as an additional attack option.”
Improvements have been made to the combat system, and players can use shield bash, deflect ranged weapons back at enemies, and perform charged attacks at enemies. Players will also be able to use both choice and opportunity when attacking enemies this time around.
Hothead told Kotaku that this new adventure includes 100 new quests, a new storyline, over70 characters, 80 new weapons, new areas and the aforementioned new difficulty level.
DeathSpank: The Baconing is slated for a summer release on PC, Mac, PSN and XBL.
According to Bloomberg, the game is due in Japan in August.
He’s also got a social game in the works, which could see Japanese release this month.
After leaving Capcom in November, Inafune founded two new companies, Compcept and Intercept, where he has greater control over what he works on.
“In this industry, it’s often the creators who have the eye for potential hits but they’re not the ones deciding what gets published,” he said.
“We’ll see many more clashes as creator- management divides widen.”
Inafune’s list of credits has something to please everyone, having created and overseen most of the Megaman franchise; produced three Resident Evil games; created Onimusha, Lost Planet and Dead Rising; and worked as an artist on the original Street Fighter.
A NeoGAF user spotted the listing, which gives the titles as Aliens Infestation.
It’s a cross-platform game with “science fiction violence”, apparently.
Published by Sega, which holds the license, the game is in development at Way Forward Technologies, the team which made Contra 4 and A Boy & His Blob.
No word from either party as yet, but we’re betting on a side-scrolling downloadable title.
As Eurogamer points out, there are at least two other Aliens games in the works – Gearbox’s long-dormant Aliens: Colonial Marines and a new title from The Creative Assembly.
Speaking in Episode 141 of the podcast, host Sean Eyestone mentions that it has aces up its sleeve that can’t be held until E3 the following week.
“We are going to have a few announcements at E3 and we have some surprises, so be looking forward to that,” he said.
“And we have something special lined-up going on a little bit before E3. So next week, we’re going to have a little special something on June 2.”
He continued: “Can’t say too much about it, keep your eyes and ears peeled. There’ll be some interesting news coming out of that leading into E3. It’s a Konami event that we’re holding. And, of course, Kojima Productions has a few things in there. But be excited, folks!”
To add more wood to the fire, a special KP Report will also release to coincide with the Konami event.
“We have a lot of reveals there that can’t wait until E3. So we’re going to have a special episode as well next week,” added Eyestone.
Watch the mountains. Watch them for possible Zone of the Enders 3 or Peace Walker PS3-based nukes to drop. MGS: Rising and MGS 3DS are almost dead certs for the event, but keep watching for a PS3 version of PW or for the return of Jehuty.

Respawn Entertainment has hired a Iain McCaig, a concept artist behind such famous figures as Darth Maul and Queen Amidala along with characters in three James Bond games. He was part of the art design team for The Secret of Monkey Island.
Speaking with Develop, McCaig said that working with Respawn has been one of “the most exhilarating experiences I’ve ever had in my career”.
“Whether it’s military games or things set in space, it doesn’t matter, my huge burning passion is in designing people,” he added.
In an interview the site promises will be published soon, McCaig said that Respawn approached him for the game its currently working on, and he “simply couldn’t turn this offer down”.
Respawn Entertainment, as you all know by now, was formed in March last year by former Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella.
There’s still no word on what exactlty the fellas are working on for EA at the moment, but whatever it is, it won’t be announced at E3.
According to a tweet from the developers: “For those asking, Respawn won’t be making any announcements at E3 this year. We will be wandering the floor though!”
Hopefully, more will be revealed soon, and the Ian McCraig news is a nice start.
CD Projekt RED and GOG are going to reveal some big news just before E3 at their “CDP Summer Days” live from Los Angeles event.
The announcements will be made on June 2 at 12:00 PST/ 3:00pm EST/7.00pm GMT via Ustream live stream.
CD Projekt RED will be making “a big announcement” about their next upcoming title, and will also have some other exciting things to share during the livecast.
The firm will also be discussing some of the successes of The Witcher 2, and will also “map out a plan for continued support for the new title.”
GOG has already teased that during the CDP Days 2011 Spring Conference it will reveal a new deal with “one of five big publishers still not signed with them: Microsoft, Lucas Arts, Electronic Arts, Square Enix or Take 2.”
Looks like come June 2, everything will be out in the open and the publisher as well as the first title out of the batch of 25 will be revealed.
You’ll be able to watch live come next week through the link up top.
The House of the Dead is coming to PlayStation 3. Sega America and Sega Europe have announced The House of the Dead: Overkill – Extended Cut for PlayStation 3, presented in high-definition for the first time with 3D and PlayStation Move support.
Originally released for Wii in 2010, the PlayStation 3 extended cut includes all seven stages re-mastered in HD, two new scenarios, new game modes, new content, and PlayStation trophies.
“The House of the Dead: Overkill – Extended Cut for the PlayStation®3 system will send players to the shrieking mad heart of mutant mayhem. This time we went further, faster and bloodier than before. We extended everything, even the title.” – Said Gary Knight of SEGA.
House of the Dead: Overkill – Extended Cut launches for PlayStation 3 in North America on October 25 and in Europe on October 28, 2011. Check out the first set of screenshots, logo, and box art at the gallery.
Obsidian Entertainment posted a new job listing today, and it sounds rather interesting. The company is looking for a 2D character animator who will “work on a highly stylized, high profile role playing game.”
Back in February, Obsidian teased a game that couldn’t be discussed at the time. Although it may not be related to the job posting below, Feargus Urquhart said that the team had been working on the project since the middle of 2010. He described it as “a licensed product that when people hear about it they’re going to be ‘well you had to do that. There’s no option, if I was a developer and I was offered that I would just do it.’”
Bungie has announced that it’s going to make an announcement next week. This is a warning, so you have some spare underwear handy when the time comes.
Writing on the developer’s blog, Bungie’s Eric Osborne explained why the Bungie.net website has been “less and less active” recently.
“A significant amount of my time is also now being dedicated to other upcoming endeavors that won’t make a splash on the front page until Bungie Day [July 7] closes in around us,” he said.
“Unfortunately, that means there are just too many balls in the air for me to juggle without letting a few fall to the ground. More explicit details about those balls in the weeks ahead.”
Osborne apologised for Bungie’s long silence, and promised the developer will “make it up to you soon”.
Another contributing factor to Osborne’s silence is a recent “super-secret Los Angeles excursion”.
Can’t wait? Osborne also alluded to “breadcrumbs tucked away into the folds of Bungie.net that just might lead to something [Bungie staff have] been working on for a little bit now”.
Bungie has entered into a long-term publishing contract with Activision, and is rumoured to have a sci-fi MMO in the works.
Metal gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima recently tweeted that he’s started recording for his new project – and being the mysterious guy that he is, also posted an image containing a picture of a character from the game.
The image shows a recording studio where two monitors can be seen, with what looks to be a snap from a cutscene displaying on them.
We haven’t got the slightest of clues as to what this image or his new project might be but don’t let that stop you from speculating.
Kojima recently said that the thing he had spent a year preparing had become meaningless, so it’s good to see him recording for a project.
Two Kojima Productions titles are rumoured to be announced at E3. Get hyped.
