Maybe a minor gaming topic, but one which has been popping up throughout the latter portion of this week is whether Sony Online Entertainment has plans to launch their upcoming sci-fi MMO FPS for the PlayStation 3. The game debuted during SOE’s open conference at its Fan Faire in Las Vegas, promising to support huge-scale persistent online environments and class-less, skill driven gameplay; PlanetSide 2 is SOE’s most ambitious project to date and certainly worth keeping an eye on.
First person shooters such as Crysis, Counter Strike, Team Fortress 2 and numerous other have proven that the PC is by far the best platform to experience some of the most unconventional and offbeat entries to the genre. However there is no ignoring the fact that home consoles now harbour a colossal portion of the FPS fanbase; a lot has changed since 2003, and though PlanetSide 2 will no doubt attract a solid following, the game’s long-running success may depend on whether it merges with the PlayStation 3. CCP Game’s DUST 514, an FPS annex to the insanely popular EVE Online, has similar ambitions thanks to the Sony’s open network policy. The game is also set to launch on the PlayStation Vita. PlanetSide for the PlayStation 3 sounds too good of an opportunity to pass up, but for now SOE president John Smedlay and creative director Matt Higby are keeping shtum.
During a press Q&A at the SOE Fan Faire, when asked whether PlanetSide 2 would also launch on the PS3, Smedley vaguely replied: ”We were first with DCUO, second with Free Realms, and we have other things planned, possibly beyond even the PS3,” Matt Higby adding “stay tuned.”
In their recent first thoughts on Planetside 2 British-based outlet PC Gamer also commented, “this will almost assuredly be a Playstation 3-crossover game. Smedley all but confirmed it when asked about it during the press panel.”
It’s certainly a tough one to call, though we’re sure to hear more from Sony Online Entertainment on PlanetSide 2 in the coming months.
The Monkey Island Special Edition Collection, which could possibly be the longest and most complicated name conceived for a videogame bundle, is coming to Europe as a retail release on September 9th, 2011.
The Monkey Island Special Edition Collection (say that five times fast) will include The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition (say that five times fast) and Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge (don't even bother to say that one out loud).
The special editions of both games include new recorded dialog, hand-drawn graphics, enhanced controls, and a hint system for when you don't know that combining the chicken with the pulley is the proper solution. Monkey Island 2 features an optional audio commentary from Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer, and Dave Grossman, the bizarre minds that made the original games.
If getting two fantastic games isn't enough for you, LucasArts is adding some bonus content to sweeten the deal. You'll receive concept art and a soundtrack from both special editions. LucasArts was working with Industrial Light & Magic on an animated Monkey Island movie, which was never released, and you'll get to see some concept art and storyboards from that too.
LucasArts hasn't specified the pricing of this combo deal yet, and there is no word on a North American release. The Monkey Island Special Edition Collection will be available on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
Nobuo Uematsu, known for his work composing Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise, is working on two new games. Previously, it was known Uematsu was at work on Level-5′s Fantasy Life, as well as rehearsing with his personal band, the Earthbound Papas.
Speaking to JPGames.de, Uematsu said he currently had two unannounced projects in the works.
“Right now, I am working on Level-5′s Fantasy Life and I hope to be able to finish my work within a month”, Uematsu told the site. “Also, there is one new game, that hasn’t been announced yet and there is another secret game. Besides [that], I am trying to have as many rehearsals with my band Earthbound Papas as possible.”
Nobuo Uematsu is a freelance Japanese video game music composer. His most recent works include The Last Story for Wii and Lord of Arcana for PSP.
Sony has something in store for fans on the next episode of GameTrailers TV. A TV schedule posted on Spike.com reveals a “Sony Surprise”-based episode for Friday, July 15.
The latest episode of GameTrailers TV, which aired July 7, boasted the exclusive reveal of the 15-minute long BioShock Infinite E3 2011 gameplay demo. The show regularly exhibits major exclusives.
Thief 4 has been awfully silent for such a big-name game. After a gentle and small announcement, all we've seen of the title has been a logo. But, hey, it's spelt Thi4f, so you know the game's going to be awesome, right?! Supererogatory might be able to shed some light on that.
A resume for one Ruben Farrus gives some small look into what to expect from Thief 4:
• Developing pre-production concepts into fully-designed systems (rewards
schedule, shops, escape gates, public zones, etc.)
• Designing the side-content of the gameʼs hub: activities, enticers, goals,
flow and rewards
• Formulating the design guidelines for “extreme situations”; memorable
scripted sequences with altered controls, camera and/or gameplay rules.
As Mr. Supererogatory notes, it sounds an awful lot like Thief: Deadly Shadows. If it ain't broke, don't shoot it with a moss arrow.
Though PlayStation 3′s Disaster Report 4 may have been cancelled, not all hope is lost for the series. Series creator Kazuma Kujo, who left Irem in May to form Granzella, wants to revive the series.
Speaking through an update on his personal Twitter account, Kujo said he will be taking action to bring the franchise back to life. Though, we’re not sure if that means he’ll necessarily be able to accomplish that goal.
Capcom is set to unveil a brand new game at ComicCon next week, according to details from a panel at the event. The World of Capcom panel will show the new title, as well as have more on Dragon’s Dogma. Capcom’s about to go big on CC: as well as this and “fantastic” news on Marvel vs Capcom 3, there’ll also be “surprises” in a Resident Evil-related event.
All the details at D’Toid. ComicCon takes place from July 22-25.
Namco Bandai launched a new countdown website tonight. The site features a Japanese-esque city painted in blue. The clock has 213 hours left, meaning we’ll find out the surprise reveal in just nine days.
Respawn Entertainment has recruited another Hollywood artist to its fold, adding Men in Black and 12 Monkeys veteran Matt Codd as art director.
Respawn revealed the hire in an interview posted on the developer’s website.
“As far as I’m concerned whether it’s video games or movies, good design isn’t all that matters. It’s all about trying to be original in this day and age which is really difficult because everything has been done at some point or another,” Codd said.
Codd has not worked in the games industry before but said movie production is “so speeded up” that it’s not as interesting as games.
“The time that’s put aside to video games is far more interesting and more fascinating to look at. A lot of the guys that I know in movies, we see a lot of game design and think ‘that’s awesome and I wish we were doing that in movies.’”
The artists listed the original Medal of Honor, Doom and Gears of War as among his favourite games, but said he’s had to give them up or spend all night playing.
Kotaku dug up Codd’s website, where you’ll find plenty of eye candy including some in the sci-fi vein Respawn is shooting for.
Back in May, Respawn managed to lure in concept artist Iain McCraig, who designed such iconic characters as Star Wars’ Queen Amidala and Darth Maul.
The studio, largely composed of former Infinity Ward staffers, is working on a futuristic shooter to be publised by EA.
In tonight’s edition of “Whatchu Talkin’ Bout News,” Microsoft registered two new domains revolving around rival electronics corporation Sony.
The domains: Sony-Microsoft.com and Microsoft-Sony.com.
Our thoughts on how the URLs might be used / what they might signify: a site to compare Microsoft’s products against Sony’s; the first hints of a joint Sony and Microsoft project; or a company merger.
Of course, this is all just (wild and crazy) speculation.

Hideo Kojima has said that any potential game based on Snatcher would at least need to have the potential to sell 200,000 units in Japan.
He tweeted that if it had to make an open-world version, similar to LA Noire, it would need to sell at least half a million.
The chatter of a new game follows the beginning of a new radio play based on the Snatcher universe, helmed by Suda 51 and Akira Yamaoka. The first few episodes brought in listening figures of 450,000 listeners.
“Even though the radio broadcast is free, if we converted it to a game, could it sell 200,000 or so domestically?,” he said.
For now, don’t hold bets on Kojima himself doing a Snatcher game anytime soon.
Bethesda Game Studios chief Todd Howard has said the studio won’t rule out external development on the Elder Scrolls series in the future after Skyrim.
It comes after the last Fallout title, New Vegas, was handed to an external developer in Obsidian Entertainment.
“I don’t know, we kind of take it bit by bit. I mean New Vegas was unique: as a publisher, we wanted to do something with Obsidian; we knew we were moving on Elder Scrolls; they had a team available,” Howard told Edge.
“They gave us the pitch and we were like, ‘That would be a really fun game’. But they had experience with the IP, and with Elder Scrolls we don’t have that. I wouldn’t rule that out, but generally with everything we want to keep it internal.”
He also said that moving development onto Elder Scrolls from Fallout after the release of Fallout 3 in 2008 only took “a few weeks.”
A high-definition upgrade of 2010′s Wii GoldenEye 007 remake is coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this year. Initially leaked by Amazon France, GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is scheduled for a full reveal at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Massimo Guarini has left Grasshopper Manufacture, apparently to set up a studio of his own. A teaser page for Ovosonico Productions was recently launched, proclaiming the upstart outfit as coming soon "from the director of the acclaimed Shadows of the Damned."
Guarini's last game was Shadows of the Damned.
A veteran of multiple media, Guarini's next venture will do more than just make games. The studio's teaser site boasts the tag line, "The sound of bold ideas," and a look at the site's source code reveals a second slogan, "Games, Music, Films with an attitude."
Before Shadows of the Damned, Guarini had a couple stints with Ubisoft, where he was involved in the Tom Clancy-branded Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six series, and he later directed Naruto: Rise of a Ninja. The multitalented developer's career has also seen him work as a photographer and filmmaker.
Released last month, Shadows of the Damned tells the story of Garcia Hotspur, who goes on a trip to hell to save his true love, Paula. His travelling companion on the long, hard road through hell is a foul-mouthed demonic skull named Johnson that can morph into a variety of guns but is also effective as a torch.
The game was critically acclaimed but commercially underwhelming. Though Guarini directed it, the names most typically associated with the game were that of executive director Suda-51, creative producer Shinji Mikami, and composer Akira Yamaoka.
Grasshopper Manufacture’s latest game is revealed in this week’s issue of Famitsu. The No More Heroes (pictured) developer announced Lollipop Chainsaw, a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 action title published by Kadokawa Games.
Players take on the role of a high school student named Juliet, who hails from a family of zombie hunters. After zombies appear in Juliet’s San Romero High School (what’s with Suda and Spanish names?), Juliet must make waste of them with both her chainsaw and cheerleading skills (acrobatics, people), showering the screen with pink blood in the process.
According to Grasshopper boss Goichi Suda, the game will deliver a previously unseen “pop” style of zombie game.
Rocketbirds, a triple nomination of the 2010 Independent Games Festival. is coming to PlayStation Network. The game sees its protagonist, Hardboiled Chicken, out to bring down the totalitarian Penguin regime that has oppressed Albatropolis for far too long. You’ll kill penguins, solve puzzles, fly jet packs, and start a revolution.
The PlayStation Network version of the game is titled Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken. It’ll run at a full 60fps in 720p and feature an optional stereoscopic 3D mode, which doesn’t hinder the frame rate or resolution.
Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken will be on display at the Sony booth at the San Diego Comic-Con this week. Those attending may want to stop by and give it a go. For now, here’s a trailer.
Darkstalkers is something people ask Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono about a lot. All day, everyday. On Twitter, in interviews. At events like Comic-Con. Naturally, Ono came prepared for this, as you can see from the picture we took above.
While a new Darkstalkers game has not been approved, Ono revealed at the Street Fighter X Tekken panel, Darkstalkers is not dead. He then asked fans to hold up $10 or $20 in support of the game and took a photo of the audience, saying he would send it to Capcom’s president.

The next game from LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule will be "risky and experimental, according to art director Kareem Ettouney.
But it may be a bit early to get your hopes up, as the studio's next project is still at the nucleus stage of its life.
"What we do is very much a continuation of our experimental... [approach]," said Ettouney, speaking to VideoGamer.com at the Develop Conference in Brighton this week.
"We like risks, we like experimentation, we like to try to impress ourselves, and each other. Without going into [specifics], because we're still very much at a nucleus stage, what we do at this stage is we just put our development hats on, and produce and draw and make prototypes, think and look at the world around us and respond to that.
"Our house style is definitely in the risk-creative sort of place. We like to push that boundary all the time."
Ettouney says we can expect Media Molecule's attitude to carry over to the game itself, whatever it turns out to be.
"Yeah, [it will be] risky and experimental. I think the game medium is just the tip of the iceberg. We are in a time when the tools have got much better, the technology has got much better, the machines are much more powerful, so at last we can stop talking about Polygons.
"We really are now close to a period where the expressive personal element of the creator is coming out, even more than in LittleBigPlanet. So we want to just continue on that trajectory and see what happens."
Ettouney appeared at this week's Develop conference alongside fellow Media Molecule founders Mark Healey and Alex Evans. The trio have expressed a desire to move away from the LittleBigPlanet franchise, drawing comparisons with parents saying goodbye as a child leaves home for the first time.

Pues por mí que sigan con el sistema de antes, yo lo veía perfecto. Las cámaras otorgaban mucho misterio y personalidad al juego, en cambio una tercera persona normal y corriente no da las mismas sensaciones.
