Fernando: “Although we are at the bottom of the timesheets, I don’t think we should be too worried as we concentrated more on race configuration today. Tomorrow morning in the third free practice session we will be preparing for qualifying and so I think we can remain optimistic for the rest of the weekend. We need to try to reach Q3, as we did in Malaysia, and aim to score as many points as possible. I think overall today we struggled to find the right set-up, but even looking at the times, we still have high hopes for this weekend.”
Nelson Piquet

Nelson: “The track conditions were quite poor early on but later in the day things were a bit better. We improved the car between the two sessions, but we still need to find more performance and I’m still not totally happy with the set-up. So we still have a lot of work to do tomorrow morning to make sure we get the most from qualifying.”
Technical Debrief with Pat Symonds, Executive Director of Engineering
Track conditions: The track was a bit dusty this morning to start with, but it soon picked up.
Chassis balance: The car has a little bit of oversteer, but we worked on the balance of the car and made some improvements.
Tyre performance: The super-soft tyre is performing better than we expected. The medium tyre still remains the better race tyre.
Problems encountered: We haven’t encountered any particular problems today.
Outlook for the rest of the weekend: Clearly there is work to do but we have more improvements to fit to the car tomorrow. So we are hopeful of moving up the order.
Alonso on having driven without KERS: ''It's hard to compare when there are 14 days in between. Different track, different circumstances, different temperatures.''
After having talked with the engineers the Spaniard is willing to make a decision on Friday night. His body language indicated he'll do without the device: ''The car feels different than usual.''
Despite P19 he would have been happy with the handling of the car: ''At the start KERS isn't a big advantage. The distance to the first corner is shorter than at Sepang. On the other hand, the extra power can be an advantage on the long straights, especially in the first lap when everyone's close together.''
Piquet used KERS all day long but is willing to get rid of it for qualifying andt the race: ''I'm not happy with the balance of the car. Fuel adjusted I'm over half a second slower than Fernando.'' The Brazilian couldn't figure out whether having KERS is beneficial in China: ''If you don't have a clear answer it might be better to drive without.''
For Renault it would be helpful when both cars are the same. On Friday night the new double-decker diffuser (Alonso) arrived. Would one car be equipped with KERS then the comparison with the conventional diffuser (Piquet) would be difficult. Alonso can't wait testing out the new diffuser: ''In our situation we have to be happy with each part that's fitted to the car. Every half a tenth is important in the position that we're in. It can decide wether you make it to Q2 or are left behind in Q1.'' The aim is clear: ''We have to get to Q3 and collect as many points possible on Sunday.''
On Saturday it will be decided whether the new diffuser will be used.
As for the tyres, the softer compound isn't too bad, Alonso: ''I've used them for five laps and they kept up on all five laps. (But) we will only get a real answer during the race.'' Piquet: ''The soft tyres keeps up for at least ten laps. It's much more consistent than we expected.''
