Questions I've seen Rac Mention:
• There was talk about an actual theater mode? Is this really something you guys are trying to do?
[EPIC] We’ve put some solid effort into supporting the e-sport community, and making the game just more fun to watch and be a part of. We don’t have any specific new features to discuss at this time.
• There was talk that the no DBNO thing was a misquote... is this true?
[EPIC] The DBNO mechanic is still present throughout the Campaign, and can be found in varying ways in some modes like our new Overrun gametype. It has, however, been removed from some of our other more traditional multiplayer modes (such as FFA, TDM, and the recently announced Domination mode). There are a multitude of reasons why this change was made, some of which are covered in our recent podcast.
• There was talk that the no Locust in MP was a misquote...is this true?
--if this is true, where did the data come from saying that people didn't want locust in MP?
--if it is a balance issue, why not allow locust and CoG to fight side by side (like in UT)?
[EPIC] It was a misquote to say that people didn’t want to play as the Locust – our fans are incredibly excited about playing as the Locust and we’ve specifically designed our new Overrun game mode around not only playing as the Locust but actually getting to feel what it’s like to have the strengths and abilities of the multitude of creatures that are part of the Locust Horde. The Locust have been removed from some of our other competitive multiplayer modes (FFA, Domination, TDM, etc.), and this decision was made not only for reasons of game balance and accessibility, but primarily because it allowed us to explore the depth of personalities of the human characters. Our players really identify with their favorite characters from the Gears universe, and by focusing on them in our MP modes, we’re able to give those characters even more personality, depth, and unique qualities that our fans have requested.
• Are all of these changes set-in-stone?
[EPIC] In terms of the shipping product, yes, these decisions are 100% set in stone and we absolutely feel that when experienced in context, our fans will not only understand the decisions, but appreciate what they add to the experience.
• Why was the decision made to only allow 1 primary weapon?
--we have our thoughts...but we were just wondering what made you guys do it. (control scheme, balance, etc.)
--With what seems to be a rifle heavy game, why would someone want to start with a Gnasher or DBS instead of a rifle?
[EPIC] There are a multitude of reasons that we made this change, some of which play well with the decisions mentioned above. The Judgment MP experience is distinctly Gears at its core, and the change to weapon loadouts has expanded the possibilities of player choice and strongly encourages new and exciting ways to play as a team. The changes are also due to a progression in the way maps were designed and how combat scenarios play out in the game. These are all small pieces of a larger puzzle, and when put together and viewed as a whole, the game is much deeper and richer than ever before. We do plan to offer a multitude of options via special playlists and weekend events, some of which are sure to include a “traditional” rifle + shotgun loadout.
• What are your thoughts on the community reaction to recent news?
--Are you surprised by the reaction?
• Why are there so many 'core' changes happening?
--Why not make a completely new (non-GoW) game?
[EPIC] We’re always surprised by the passion and dedication of our fans. It is both a humbling and daunting task to evolve and update such a beloved franchise with every iteration, and we’re confident in saying that the game is not just changed but improved. Judgment is still very, very much Gears at its core. While any of the individual changes may sound odd when taken at face value, they play together in a fantastic way when all put together in the context of the game as a whole. The feedback we’ve gotten from everyone who’s played the game has been overwhelmingly positive.
Gameplay Questions Based on Info Since Last Podcast (12/12/12):
• What is this 'Domination' thing we are hearing about from OXM? (is classic KotH gone?)
[EPIC] The new Domination gametype in Judgment is an evolution of the King of the Hill gametype from Gears of War 3. While it does replace KOTH, that Gears 3 gametype was an evolution of Annex from Gears of War 2, which was an adaptation of the Domination gametype from some of our previous titles. Domination is a great fit for the Gears franchise, and plays to the strengths of the new tactics and teamwork you’ll see in Judgment. We know there’s a lot of interest in how this is evolved, so it’s something you can expect us to discuss in depth in the next podcast.
• Why was it decided to remove DBNO? (is it like this in all modes? Campaign? Horde? Beast?)
--Is it possible to add in after release if people are dissatisfied?
--Is it possible to have an option for private matches with DBNO?
[EPIC] See response above.
• We've heard that MP is all CoG v CoG now (because people didn't like Locust). Is this true?
--What about people who are Color Blind? (any color blind assist option?)
--Wont the character's voices (battle chatter) be confusing?
--Will we be seeing locust? (particularly, RAAM, Skorge, Sniper, Kantus...[the characters discussed daily on the forums])
[EPIC] See response above
• The Active Bonus has been removed...
--Is this for all weapons, or just starting weapons? (ex: will torque and boom have 'perks' for actives?)
----Why wasn't an active bonus included for power weapons? (short torque charge, faster digger, ect.)
--Is this for all game modes (horde? campaign?)
[EPIC] All weapons still use the active reload mechanic, and the benefit for getting the active reload in competitive multiplayer is an increase in reload speed. In the Campaign, the perfect active reload will also impart the more traditional bonuses you’ve seen in previous Gears of War titles (damage boost, increase to rate of fire, a boost to damage radius, etc.). In competitive modes, however, these mechanics often muddied the experience and made it confusing for players not only to use and understand the weapons, but to gauge how and why they died in what they thought was a “fair fight” when in reality they had a hidden disadvantage. The removal of these “hidden bonuses” in competitive MP greatly levels the playfield and makes the game more approachable to a wider audience.
• Can literally 'any' (non heavy) weapon be used with the boomshield? (torque?)
[EPIC] Correct: any “non heavy” weapon can be used along with the Boomshield. This makes the shield a true “power weapon” in the maps that is worthy of contention. It does have its weaknesses, however, and players can be tricked or forced into dropping it by a number of different means. We’ll have to save the details on that until later, however…
• When will we get to see other MP modes?
---can we at least have info on what may change occur between FFA and other modes?
[EPIC] We have more news on this topic coming in the next few weeks!
• Can you talk some more about 'Epic Points'?
[EPIC] “Epic Points” was the temporary name for a feature we’ll be discussing more in the coming weeks.
Gameplay Questions Based on Info Since VGAs:
• What changes were made to the game based off of player feedback? (from people who were brought to Cary)
[EPIC] All of our playtests yield a virtual goldmine of information that works its way into the game. The feedback from the community playtest specifically helped us to polish our control schemes, weapon balance, map layouts, team mechanics, and overall game features. It was also a great confidence boost for the team to get such honest and straightforward feedback from the players.
• What are these new enemies we are seeing?
• We've seen some changes to some weapons...what changes can you talk about with respect to weapon tweaks?
[EPIC] We’ll go into more detail about new enemies and weapon features in the coming weeks.
Questions Based on PAX Info/Gameplay:
• What is the [VP] thing in the PAX videos?
[EPIC] The [VP] tag was the early name for a feature that evolved into our current Star Ranking system in the Judgment Campaign. We’ll talk more about that exciting new feature soon!
• Will FFA be 'stranded' or can we join with a group of friends? (many want to play FFA in the same game as friends)
[EPIC] Ranked FFA will be single player parties only, while Quickmatch allows parties of up to 5 players to find matches together.
• Which characters can you be in FFA?
--and...is it wingman style (character chosen for you) or normal (you choose your character)
[EPIC] We have not yet released the full roster of characters that will be available in Judgment multiplayer, but you will always get to choose the character you wish to play as in our traditional game modes, and the class of character or creature you want to play as in Overrun.
• Do Inks and Smokes stick to opponents (when thrown) like frags? (and are Flame 'Nades returning)
[EPIC] Only the Frag Grenades stick to opponents, and only on a direct hit (i.e. you can’t bounce them off a wall or the floor and get them to stick). Incendiary Grenades are still in the game, but they are considered to be power weapons because they not only do massive amounts of damage but also have a very wide AOE effect that is useful for area denial. This means that they are pickups in the maps, and not part of the players’ loadout selection.
Overrun Questions
Overrun General:
• Are there any other classes that haven't been announced? (can you announce any? More CoG? More Locust?)
• Can Overrun be played in Private Matches? (if so, can there be bots?)
• Is there a chance that we will be able to choose a class and a character?
--ex: play as an Engineer, but want to play as Cole
--Or, will each class have multiple characters to choose from? (ex: engineer = Dizzy or Baird, Scout = Bernie or Garron)
• Will we be able to have QuickMatch (or Join in Progress)?
Campaign Questions:
• Can you talk about Valor Points?
• How long is the campaign? (longer than GoW3?)
• Will Arcade mode be returning?
---Will we be getting more customization options for Arcade?
• Will we get to see any UIR involved in the campaign?
• We've seen who the writers are, but who is doing the soundtrack. (and which other game would have the most similar soundtrack?)
• Will the lighting in campaign be the darker feel of GoW1?
• Will we get to see the Kryll (or any other old classic enemies)?
• Will we see any Cameos? (Marcus, Chaps, Hanley, ect.)
--any Carmines?
Horde/Beast Questions:
• Will these modes be returning?
--What changes will be made to Beast/Horde
----Will we be getting more customization options for these modes?
----Will the 'cha-ching' noise return in horde?
• Will we be able to use mutators in Beast?
• Will we ever be able to have more than 3 mutators on at once?
• Will the class system be used in Horde? (was this even considered?)
[EPIC] We’ll have more specific information about these game modes in the coming weeks!
VS Multiplayer Questions:
• For the no DBNO gametypes, the players just seem to 'flop'. Will this change?
--shooting in the arm should cause the arm to come off or something more gory.
[EPIC] Player deaths take some momentum from the direction and power of the weapon that killed them. There are a number of different ways in which this could play out, with varying levels of results depending on where they were hit, which weapon was used, and how much damage was taken.
• Will we be seeing any new objective gametypes? (CTF?)
[EPIC] We are only ready to discuss information on those gametypes that we’ve already revealed.
• Who will be the default MP character? (still Marcus? Baird? Generic CoG?)
--Also, when can we expect to see a MP roster?
[EPIC] The default character in Judgment’s multiplayer is the star of the show - and fan favorite – Baird. We have not yet revealed the full roster of other characters that you’ll see in Judgment’s multiplayer game modes.
• Will there be more character/gun customization than in previous games?
[EPIC] Yes, there will be more character and gun customization options than in previous titles. We’ll have more information on this in the coming weeks.
• How much involvement/influence has PCF had on the GoW:J Multiplayer?
[EPIC] People Can Fly and Epic Games have worked together very closely on all aspects of Gears of War: Judgment. The studios have worked together on all aspects and features of the game.
• Are then any other unannounced weapons?
[EPIC] We’re only able to discuss information about those features and weapons that we’ve already revealed.
• Will the issue with the round resetting after a host migration in Ranked matches be fixed?
[EPIC] All rounds are reset upon host migration as a matter of necessity to ensure fair and balanced game sessions.
• Now that there aren't locust for MP, will the game be able to load all chars into memory? (so no more default char?)
[EPIC] There are still significantly more characters available than could fit into a single match.
Other Questions:
Game Mechanics:
• What is the CMS compared to other Gears titles?
[EPIC] We’ve talked a lot about how the Judgment experience is much faster and more fluid than previous Gears of War titles. Characters move a little bit faster, and animations have been sped up, shortened, or removed entirely. It’s important to note, however, that when we say that the game is “faster” we’re not just referring to the ground traversal speed of the players. Getting into a game is faster and more streamlined, players are taken out of the game less often, and get back into combat quicker. Players can move through the world with improved agility, and can much more easily navigate through a layered and more vertical combat space. Overall, the “faster” gameplay experience has been significantly improved.
• Will Tac-Com be improved at all?
--The new Tac-Com system is missing some features that people really enjoyed with the classic 'bubble system'
--Cool idea listed here
[EPIC] More specific information to come in the following weeks!
Controls:
• Is it possible to tag the Stim or Beacon Grenades to enemies like other grenades?
• What changes are there to AoE and DPS for the grenades (all types)
viewfull=1#post30532204"]here[/URL]
[EPIC] More specific information to come in the following weeks!
Aesthetics:
• Is there any sort of indicator showing that a player has 'nades? (so you can tell who has them and who doesn't)
--Previously, we could see a player holding 'nades in his/her hand...now we tap the button, so there is no visual clue
• Will any purchased DLC carry over to GoW:J (weapon skins/characters)?
• Will we be getting new quotes for old characters?
• Will gun skins be returning? (will ones from GoW3 carry over?)
--Will there be a weapon skin for the Snub now?
• Will there be any unlocks/medals awarded for obtaining lvl 400 in GoW3? (not sure if possible due to re-upping being added late)
• Will we be getting a nice manual, or will it be online?
• Many people want some sort of connection strength indicator, is this something you could/would implement?
• Will we have an option for fading HUD? (for plasma owners)
[EPIC] More specific information to come in the following weeks!
Canon Related:
• Are we going to continue to see books and comics for the GoW series?
[EPIC] The current run of comics and novels is in stores and available now. The Gears universe is vast and full of possibilities, however, so there’s any number of options to expand it in the future.
• To what extent is this game going to be "breaking the canon"?
[EPIC] In a couple very minor cases, we did break with the established cannon of the Gears story in Judgment. Even though the specific instances were very minor and few in number, we did not take these decision lightly and only did them to ensure a better experience for our players.
• Who manufactured the Sim-Gas and the Beacon 'Nades? (CoG? UIR?)
[EPIC] These weapons are part of the powerful arsenal of the COG’s elite Onyx Guard uUnit.
• Who manufactured the Booshka? (is it related to the digger?)
[EPIC] The Booshka is a UIR-manufactured grenade launcher.
Other:
• Do you guys try to implement community ideas (like these), and can you talk about any new additions created from community ideas?
• Can we please get more customization options for Private Matches?
• What new enemies will there be?
--Will any old enemies (that didn't return in GoW3) be back? (sires, kryll)?
• Can you talk about any of the voice actors (new? returning? cameos?)
• Can you announce any game editions? (Epic, Limited, ect)
• Will anything carry over from GoW3 to GoW:J? (MP stats, medals, ect)
• Many people were upset because of the fact that new elements could be added to Beast/Horde.
--Will GoW:J be easier to add things to? (new fortifications/enemies)
• Will we have Seriously 4.0? (or 0.0 because it is before GoW1 )
[EPIC] We’ll have more specific information to discuss on these topics in the following weeks.
