El Universal Media Disc (UMD) es un disco óptico desarrollado por Sony para su uso en la consola portátil PlayStation Portable. Puede contener 900 Mb de datos, hasta 1.8 GB en doble capa, que incluyen juegos, películas o música. De esta forma, el UMD ha sido dividido en tres vertientes según sus aplicaciones: la primera, UMD Game, es la más utilizada permitiendo jugar a los títulos exclusivos de PSP. La segunda corresponde al UMD Video, empleando el códec de vídeo MPEG-4 AVC y el ATRAC3plus para el audio, que le dota de buena calidad y reducido espacio debido a su compresión, que unido a la nitidez de la pantalla de la consola convirtieron al dispositivo de Sony en una de las portátiles con mejor definición hasta la fecha. Y por último está el UMD Audio, cuya repercusión fue nula debido a la fuerte competencia.
Especificaciones
Un disco convencional UMD está compuesto por un disco de menor tamaño que un CD cubierto por una carcasa de plástico, con un espacio para que el lector de la PlayStation Portable lo lea mediante un láser rojo de 660 nanómetros. El disco, de 60 milímetros y peso entre 2,5 y 3,5 gramos, tiene una capacidad de 900Mb y de 1.8 GB en doble capa. Ésta, le hace muy superior a los CD-ROM (700 MB), los GD-ROM de Yamaha para la Dreamcast de Sega (1 GB), al GameCube Optical Disc creado por Panasonic para la GameCube de Nintendo (1.5 GB), pero inferior al DVD-ROM (4.7 GB), aunque rara vez los datos escritos llegan al límite de la capacidad. La durabilidad del mismo se estima en algo más de 100 años a régimen normal de trabajo, lo que es algo más que los CD y DVD actuales y bastante más que los Blu-ray hechos de celulosa. Puede enfrentarse a ambientes de trabajo de funcionamiento o lectura con una temperatura entre -25 °C y 70 °C. Para el almacenamiento por periodos prolongados no deben soportar temperaturas inferiores a -20 °C o superiores a 50 °C.

UMD Game
Entre todas los mercados, PlayStation Portable cuenta con más de 740 juegos. Si bien el precio varía dependiendo de la región, los lanzamientos en territorio español rondaban entre los 27,95 € y los 39,99 €. Gracias a las ediciones económicas (platinum y essentials), es fácil encontrar a parte del catálogo en stock por debajo de los 20 euros.
Packaging
Los juegos vienen en cajas de polipropileno plástico semitransparente con una funda exterior de polietileno transparente que cubre la carátula impresa en papel. Las medidas son 200x140x21mm, y el peso, 50 gr. En su interior varios clips se encargan de la sujección del manual de instrucciones y del propio disco de juego. A parte del manual de juego (a color o en blanco y negro, dependiendo del distribuidor) pueden venir hojas informativas sobre otros juegos de la compañía, página web, etc. El sistema de sujección del UMD viene derivado del presente en los DVDs, con un contorno elevado que se encarga del anclaje del soporte e impide la liberación accidental, sólo interrumpido en dos secciones por donde podrá extraerse pinzando con los dos dedos (pulgar e índice). Además, gracias a la resistencia y flexibilidad del material base, está asegurada su durabilidad. El hecho de no contar con un punto de presión central (a diferencia de las cajas para CDs o DVDs), además de por la propia carcasa del UMD, hace que el disco no sufra riesgo de resquebrajamiento por un mal uso o por la extracción e insercción continuada.
Los juegos vienen clasificados por código de contenidos por edad: PEGI, CERO, ESRB y ELSPA, de forma bien visible en el frontal de la carátula.

Línea económica
PSP Platinum
La gama Platinum pertenece a la línea económica de Sony PlayStation en las regiones PAL, en concreto de Europa, Australia, Nueva Zelanda, India y África. Está disponible desde el primer sistema de juegos de Sony (PlayStation) pasando por PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable y PlayStation 3, y se caracteriza por presentar el packaging del juego en color metalizado. El anuncio de la serie Platinum para el sistema portátil tuvo lugar en mayo del 2006, con un precio inicialmente fijado de 24,99€, aunque se asentaría en los 19,99€. La gama de títulos a precio reducido se vería finalmente sustituida por la, aún más económica, serie Essentials; disponible en el mercado desde verano del 2010.

PSP Essentials
Sony Europa anunció[1] el 14 de mayo del 2010 la introducción de una línea económica para títulos de PlayStation Portable llamada Essentials. Los juegos que llegarían bajo esta nueva gama estarían disponibles en Europa, Australia y Nueva Zelanda (Japón cuenta con la línea The Best y EEUU con Favorites) a partir del 2 de junio al PVP recomendado de 9,99€. Los PSP Essentials pueden adquirirse tanto en formato fisico (UMD) como en la PlayStation Store mediante descarga digital. Al igual que la línea Platinum, la lista de títulos ha ido creciendo de forma regular; no siempre de forma coincidente en cuanto a soporte (lanzamiento digital y físico), como en cuanto a territorio (variando el listado de juegos).

UMD Passport
Debido al éxito de ventas en Japón de la portátil PlayStation Portable y de su software, y ante la falta de lector UMD en su sucesora (aunque sí es compatible con sus títulos), la PlayStation Vita, Sony decide poner en marcha el programa UMD Passport. Este sistema permite a los dueños legales de juegos de PSP el insertar sus discos en la portátil, registrarlos en sus cuentas de PlayStation Network, y descargarlos de nuevo (siempre que se encuentren en la Store) desde su PS Vita; eso sí, pagando un precio variable por título que va desde los 100 yen a los 1,000 (entre 1 y 10 euros).
La aplicación se puso al alcance de los usuarios nipones, vía PlayStation Store, a partir del 6 de diciembre del 2011. El resto de mercados (EEUU, Europa,...) no disponen de este servicio, debido al escaso interés comercial (no así el de hacking) ante la PlayStation Portable de Sony; todo ello, a pesar de contar con precios inferiores a los marcados en Japón.[2]
UMD Video
Calidad
Desde la muerte del soporte analógico de vídeo (VHS) fueron numerosos los intentos de generar un algoritmo de vídeo digital que diera una buena calidad en relación al especio requerido. El grupo MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) creó el estándar MPEG1 (Video CD), al que le seguiría el MPEG2 (DVD), que daba una calidad decente al mejorar los algoritmos de compresión y se reducían a su vez los artefactos gráficos, usando menor especio en el medio óptico que lo soportaba. La buena relación calidad-precio acabaría también acentuando las ventas de los reproductores de DVD que cada vez eran más baratos.
Los avances se estancarían hasta que cinco años después se desarrollase el estándar MPEG4, haciéndose populares con posterioridad los algoritmos de compresión DIVX (comercial) y XVID (software libre). Éstos también permitían su uso en reproductores de bajo coste, lo que unido al incremento de las redes P2P (Peer2Peer) y al tráfico de películas y vídeos en general de forma libre, acabarían explotando las ventas de estos reproductores.
Fuera de ese entorno, y varios años después sería cuando naciese el formato AVC (Advance Video Coding), llegando a ser, prácticamente hasta la actualidad, el estándar más avanzado de la historia en cuanto a codificación de vídeo. Éste ofrece una calidad increíble con una reducción de los artefactos gráficos, considerablemente mejor que en las capacidades del VCD o el DVD, aunque, sin embargo, se trata de un algoritmo muy complejo que requiere gran capacidad de cálculo por parte del reproductor para mostrarse de forma fluida. Y es ahí donde entra la PlayStation Portable de Sony.
PlayStation Portable llegó al mercado con el objetivo de triunfar, aparte de como entretenimiento jugable, como sistema de distribución multimedia, algo que tuvieron en mente casi todas las consolas con CD de la historia. El problema era que, incluso el estándar MPEG1 (VCD) con su simple algoritmo de compresión era demasiado complejo para la CPU de consolas como PC Engine CD, Mega CD, PSX, Saturn, etc. llegandolo a reproducir, pero por hardware (add-ons), no por software.
Cuando PSP se lanzó en Estados Unidos comenzó el soporte multimedia basado en dos campañas principales: el UMD Video y el UMD Music. La portátil había sido ideada como una consola multimedia y su co-procesador, llamado MediaEngine, aparte de permitir realizar tareas auxiliares de apoyo a la CPU, permite descodificar AVC por hardware, algoritmo inalcanzable a otras consolas de igual categoría sin esta posibilidad. PSP no tiene que calcular como se visualiza una película en AVC; en las instrucciones del MediaEngine ya viene escrito cómo se hace. Es así como se crea el UMD Video, como contenedor propiedad de Sony con vídeo en AVC (MPEG-4 AVC), con unos 3-4 Mb/s de bitrate, audio en Sony AT3 (ATRAC3plus) y una resolución DVD (720x480). Posiblemente por las prisas en no quedarse atrás respecto a Nintendo DS, la portátil de Nintendo, Playstation Portable fue lanzada sin salida de TV, algo que si se había tenido en mente en su desarrollo y que subsanaron con la primera revisión de la consola (PSP Slim); momento éste, ya con el alto nivel de piratería del sistema, demasiado tardío para lo que podría haber sido una mejor respuesta de público.
Soporte
En el momento de la salida de la Playstation Portable, el formato PSP Game obtiene un soporte muy amplio, dado el éxito de ventas de la portátil. No así en el caso de UMD Video, que no consigue el soporte internacional que se esperaba debido a la fortaleza del DVD Video. Aún así, fueron varias las compañías que mostraron interés en lanzar vídeos en este formato, y así fue en el caso de: Disney, Warner Bros. Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Lions Gate Entertainment, Sony Pictures, New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, y Anchor Bay Entertainment. Con todo, se consiguió un considerable catálogo de películas, vídeos musicales y series, principalmente en Japón y el mercado anglosajón. Lejos de ser un fracaso, casi todo el stock existente de películas de casi todas las productoras se vendió y hubo películas que coparon mucho nivel de ventas. Aún así, considerando como menor el mercado de vídeo en UMD frente al éxito abrumador de la competencia, se fue abandonando.[3]
El hecho de que Sony no liberara la patente del soporte Universal Media Disc ha hecho que su uso se restringiera únicamente a la consola portátil PlayStation Portable. Aún cuando éste lo permitía, no se incluyeron lectores para el mismo en ningún otro tipo de aparato (reproductores de vídeo, ordenadores,...) por lo que su difusión ha sido limitada.

Películas para adultos
En el mercado japonés no es dificil encontrarse con películas eróticas y pornográficas en UMD. Este tipo de productos se pusieron a la venta a partir del verano del 2005, inicialmente por iniciativa de dos productoras del género: Glay'z y H.M.P. a las que pronto se unirían más. Mientras que el software para PlayStation Portable está sujeto a la aprovación de Sony Computer Entertainment, la división de juego de Sony no tiene influencia sobre las películas estrenadas para el sistema. "A diferencia de los juegos, creemos que las películas en UMD son un medio de uso general, como las películas en DVD. Nosotros no controlamos su contenido de la manera que lo hacemos con los juegos", comentó un representante de SCE. "No estamos en la posición de saber qué tipo de vídeos UMD se lanzan."
Algunos usuarios se cuestionaron la decisión de Sony de aceptar material de las editoras de contenido adulto, mientras que otros imaginaron que la compañía había aprendido de la guerra entre Betamax y VHS, donde ese tipo de películas pudieron afectar significativamente a la expansión del nuevo formato. Una de las razones del fracaso del formato Betamax fue la explosión de películas pornográficas en VHS, ya que a este género no se le dio autorización en el formato Betamax de Sony.
