Let's Begin
Some days ago we announced that we received a final prototype sample of the DS-Xtreme 4Gb, this wasn't a final review unit as such but more of a ‘play with it and see’ unit.
The results are in, we've briefly tested out some of the respective functions on the cart and then some, continue reading to check out what this baby can do!
The look
Our DS-Xtreme came packaged in a cool designer box. Open the box and inside there is a usb cable and the tiny cart size DS-Extreme. What hits you right away is that there is nothing else at all. No pass me, no bulky hardware addons, nothing. Just the unit with memory on board and all the tools inbuilt.
The DS-Xtreme takes a completely fresh approach via loading from slot 1 (DS Slot), it does not need any other hardware and just plugs in as if it were a game cart. Onboard it has 4Gb of memory (512MB) as well as an in-built USB port for file transfers. One of the major bonuses that the brand new slot 1 loading mechanism in the DS-Xtreme brings is that it doesn't require a pass card or any front attachments; everything required is in the cartridge. So therefore your DS can look as good as ever, without the Need For any extra bulk. Can this be the re-definition of true plug and play? We will see…
Switch it on!
As you switch on your ds you are hit with a cool surprise. LEDS that light up on the back of the DS X-treme!
Pictured above is the unit powered from the USB showing the ultra bright left red LED, both LED's are true ultra bright full color.
The Operating System
Judging by the Operating System (OS) interface, the DS-X devs have proven that they want the OS to be as much fun as possible. It has animated menus, flying popup boxes and a number of flashy effects; this was all in the default skin. We have also heard that the OS is very powerful that end users will be able to do a lot with it in terms of customization and extra features.
Both touch screen and cross pad works for operating the OS which is kind of neat as you have a choice. Really a young child could navigate the menu as the icons are big bold and flashy.
Performance Test:
We gave each of the main functional areas a sweet but short seeing to in order to see what this baby can do.
Homebrew Loading
As seen from their last video release, homebrew on the DS-Xtreme just plain works.
Here is the official video DS-X developers recently released, it shows DSorganize running with no recompile.
There was no need to recompile or make any changes to the standard packages of homebrew we tried.
Image Loading
One of the un documented features of the DS-Xtreme is that it can load game images. As you've probably noticed a lot of slot 2 and recent slot 1
solutions have problems running of their flash cart with more recent titles.
We tested a few select number of images (remember you must own the original, to even think about such a thing) and there were no glitches, no freezes or stuttering. Two key games that have proved to be problematic on other carts, Ultimate Spiderman and the new Lego star wars game just worked without any patching or OS update.
Transfer Speeds
The data transfer speed is insanely high in comparison to other flash carts, it's just as fast as USB stick which is USB 2.0 client. The in-built USB port on the cart makes it super convenient to organize what you put on the product.
Xceedingly cool, bring on the final release!
So far everything looks set in place for the DS-Xtreme to rise to the top in the world of DS flashcarts. It's small, slick, super simple to use and above all has great compatibility all round. Right now, the DS-Xtreme remains in our DS Lite and we really look forward to receiving a final review sample and seeing what new features will be brought to the table as the product "evolves" over time.

...It plays music too!
There have been a lot of question asked about the music playback capabilities. I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you a bit about what you can expect.
Yes, it plays music
To give you a little background, for a short while I personally was on the fence about what we should provide regarding music playback. There is so much great homebrew out there already which does an excellent job at it. And as fun as it can be, it doesn't often make sense to reinvent the wheel so-to-speak. We also want to support and drive the homebrew community and want to make sure people are exploring all the great stuff that has been created.
On the other hand, we want to ensure that you will be able to take the device out of the box, plug it in, and immediately be able to copy your songs over and play them. It is a benefit for the users who are not quite as familiar with the homebrew scene. We also have this great skinning engine which will lend itself well to the creation of some fantastic media player skins.
To make a long story short (too late), I and the other members of the development team spent a lot of time reading the forum posts and talking to you guys, and it really felt like the consensus was that it would be a good idea to include it as an out-of-the-box feature. So, we did it
We didn't want to give you a simple "Ugly-long-list-of-filenames-in-a-single-directory-from-which-you-can-pick-one-and-play-it" type music players. Instead, we scan the filesytem for music files, and automatically organize them into a music library for you, by artist, album, genre etc. From that music library you can either pick an artist, genre, song, album etc. and play it immediately, or you can queue it up into an on-the-fly playlist. We also provide full shuffle and repeat functionality. And of course it's all completely run by our skinning engine. Finally, there's one other super fun feature which I will hold off on discussing, as I'm sure I wouldn't do it justice in words. I believe we should have a video up soon so you can check it out.
