I do not know about you but I am very excited to get my hands on Alpha Protocol when it releases later this June here in North America. This is a title that I have been dying to play for the first time since it was announced way back when. However, I get a feeling that Alpha Protocol is not getting the fair attention that it deserves from many media outlets (Websites and magazines) and I want to use this time to give you a heads up as to why you should be enticed to Alpha Protocol.
From the people who brought you KOTOR 2
First and foremost, the game is being developed by Obsidian, the company that brought us Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 – The Sith Lords and Neverwinter Nights 2. While I never got the chance to play Neverwinter Nights 2, I did spend an incredible amount of time with KOTOR 2 and I must say that the title was very on par with what Bioware did with the original KOTOR. Had LucasArts given Obsidian more time, KOTOR 2 would have been hailed as the flagship KOTOR title instead of Bioware’s original. There were many innovative gameplay elements, such as the influence system that really gave more depth to an already enjoyable experience. The influence system was later resused by Bioware with Dragon Age: Origins. More fleshed out than KOTOR 2’s, but remember, it started with KOTOR 2.
Its more of an RPG than Mass Effect 2 and better RPG than Final Fantasy XIII
Unfortunately I have been unable to get my hands on Alpha Protocol or been invited to any media/press events where the game was shown off, but I can vouch to say that from what I know of the game, its turning out to be a better RPG than this year’s Mass Effect 2. Now Mass Effect 2 is probably going to be a candidate for RPG Game of the Year for many media outlets, but yet Bioware is receiving a nice amount of complaints regarding the watered down RPG feel of Mass Effect 2. It has even drawn my attention regarding Bioware’s direction with Mass Effect 2. So saying that Mass Effect is a clear-cut winner for RPG of the year is pushing it. Then there is Final Fantasy XIII which in my mind was not what I expected out of a Final Fantasy title and should not really be considered a winner for RPG of the year. From what I am witnessing Alpha Protocol is going to blow Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII out of the water this year when it comes to the RPG department. Your decisions really do matter and the consequences will really be felt at later points in the game, making the experience that much intense.
Its more of a Stealth game than Splinter Cell: Conviction
Okay, so Splinter Cell: Conviction was just released and I’m sure that anyone who owns the game is satisfied. Either satisfied because the experience is satisfying or satisfied to finally have Sam Fisher back once again. However I am hearing that while Conviction is a great game, it does not feel as stealthy as previous Splinter Cell games and instead, feels more like an action shooter. This leaves room for Alpha Protocol to sneak in and steal the show as the next best stealth game.
Yes, Alpha Protocol is officially labeled as an “Action RPG” but please do not take ease on the stealth aspects of this title. Again, I have not been able to play this game yet, unfortunately, but from what I have been seeing; Alpha Protocol will blow you away with the sheer amount of stealth that this game packs. It has been said that you can go through the entire game without killing a person, just doing hand-to-hand take downs and whatnot. It is difficult, but it just goes to show that you do not have to run through this game Rambo style. I wonder if it is possible to go through Splinter Cell: Conviction without killing a person with your gun?
It’s a Modern RPG
What will really be a fresh experience with Alpha Protocol is the idea that this is a Modern RPG, yes, a modern rpg. This is significant because most if not all RPG games are either in a fantasy or sci-fi setting, think Final Fantasy, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age. Sometimes you’ll see post-apocalyptic settings used for RPGs, but they are still not modern. In Alpha Protocol, not only does it take place in real life locals such as Russia, East Asia, and the Middle East, but the timeframe is today, not in the near future such as 2025, it is taking place circa 2010. One thing that I am really progressive about is innovation within the gaming industry, especially in an industry where the trend is to follow trends. There are no pools of magic to draw from, no spells, no summons just modern gadgets and pure espionage.
Assuming that Alpha Protocol is successful, I can guarantee you that the new trend in the RPG realm would to bring the setting into modern times, similar to what is happening with FPS games (Bad Company, new Medal of Honor, and Modern Warfare). It would be interesting to see a modern RPG from Bioware, Square-Enix, and Bethesda, it really would. I would love to play an RPG title that takes place in Miami, Florida in modern times, an RPG that takes place in Tokyo, Japan in modern times. Eventually modern RPGs would become a trend but atleast it is a much needed trend because how many more times can we play a RPG in the Fantasy or Sci-Fi realm? With Alpha Protocol, this is where it all starts and you can make it happen come June when it releases worldwide by purchasing the title.
When it is all said and done, Alpha Protocol would be that game that came out of nowhere and immediately changed the way the industry viewed RPGs. Coming from the people who created Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 – The Sith Lords, and Neverwinter Nights 2, I have all the faith that Obsidian would pull this one out with Alpha Protocol. I would not be surprised if come November, December, and January 2011, you hear Alpha Protocol in the same sentence as “…..RPG Game of the Year”. RPG Game of the Year for Alpha Protocol? That’s right I said it! Remember, you heard it here first.
