by Jeremy Dunham
March 14, 2006 - As part of the PlayStation Business Brief today in Tokyo, Ken Kutaragi confirmed that the PlayStation 3 will require the hard drive peripheral. In total, it will be 60GB big, be completely upgradeable, and support Linux OS. Additionally, the peripheral will act as a home server and allow users to store various forms of media to be pulled up elsewhere.
Interestingly, Kutaragi didn't confirm if the system will actually ship with a hard drive or not -- just that it's required. It's semantics, we know, but we thought that it was worth pointing out.

Of course, it'll still play PS2 and movies on DVD, but all PS3 releases will be on Blu-ray.
The company expects initial BD-ROM production to reach 2.5 million in Japan and Europe and 5 million in the US.

Kutaragi has moved on to discussing PS3. He's stated that the system has indeed been delayed because of copy protection functionality isn't ready with Blu-ray. He's reinforced that the software medium is indeed the next big step for PlayStation, though -- the PS1 used CDs, the PS2 used DVDs, and the PS3 uses Blu-ray.

Kutaragi has mentioned to expect a major new PSP update this Spring (isn't it just about Spring already?). He revealed there will be PSP videophone capability in Fall, with an EyeToy and VOIP for the PSP. He also revealed some sort of GPS functionality for the PSP, with the first title to use this being Hot Shots Golf. The next version of the PSP web browser will have Flash support.
Interestingly, Kutaragi has mentioned an emulator for PSP that will play PS1 titles. Sony will offer PS1 games for download at a low price.
Ken: We're never announcing the price. When the Playstation 3 launches in stores, the only way to obtain the console is by guessing the price at the first attempt. That will temporarily fix shortage problems.
Ken: Oh and the Playstation 3 can also wash your dishes, read your mind, sprout into a tripod and take over the world and even turn into a spaceship...Honest.
Ken: One more thing, to contend with Nintendo's DS Lite, Sony will release the DSPSP Ultra Thin. It looks even sexier, has 8 dimensional graphics and wipes your ass.
